Overstretched local police teams combine to seize 20 vehicles

Joint operation on Trinity Road shows what neighbourhood officers can do together.

Police seized around 20 vehicles during a road safety operation on Trinity Road on this week, with Putney’s local team among three neighbourhood units involved.

Officers from the Southfields, Westhill and Putney Safer Neighbourhood Teams ran the operation under Op Cubo, a long-running Metropolitan Police programme that uses automatic number plate recognition cameras to flag problem vehicles in real time.

Those stopped on Trinity Road, SW18, were found to be driving without insurance, without a licence, or outside the conditions of their licence. Officers also identified immigration-related violations.

The operation brought together three wards that do not routinely work on enforcement together. We have reported extensively on the pressures facing local policing, including officers in East Putney admitting last year that they were “powerless to stop thefts” because of resourcing constraints. A proactive operation producing concrete results offers a different picture.

PC Robert Quijano Amigo, based in Southfields ward, reported the results through the Met’s community alert system.
