1. Acceptance of Terms

Modern Standard Media Ltd may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the site will constitute acceptance of the updated terms.

2. Permitted Use

You agree to use Putney.news only for lawful purposes and in a way that does not infringe on others’ use or enjoyment of the site. Prohibited behaviour includes transmitting offensive content, harassing others, or disrupting service.

3. Intellectual Property

All content on Putney.news — including text, images, design, code, and other intellectual property — remains the property of Modern Standard Media Ltd or its licensors. You may use the content for personal, non-commercial purposes only.

You may not copy, reproduce, modify, republish, transmit, or exploit any content without prior written permission from Modern Standard Media Ltd.

4. Contributions

By submitting content (e.g. stories, photos, videos) to Modern Standard Media Ltd, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual licence to use, modify, and distribute it across our platforms.

You retain copyright over your contribution, but you confirm it is your own original work and does not violate any UK laws or third-party rights.

We reserve the right to edit or decline any submissions and are not obliged to publish contributed content.

5. Community Participation

To post comments or participate in discussions on Putney.news, you may need to register. You must provide accurate, personal details and comply with our community standards, set out in full in our Comment Policy.

In summary, we ask that you:

  • Be respectful and constructive.
  • Post no abusive, illegal, or discriminatory content.
  • Post no spam, advertising, or self-promotion.
  • Not impersonate others or create fake profiles.
  • Use no inappropriate usernames.
  • Not share personal information (yours or others’).

Breaching these rules may result in account suspension or removal of content.

6. Membership

This section applies if you become a paying member of Putney.news. It sits alongside the rest of these Terms.

6.1 Who provides your membership

Your membership is provided by Modern Standard Media Ltd (company number 15767979), which you are contracting with when you join.

6.2 Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to become a member.

6.3 Membership options

We currently offer:

  • Annual membership at £70 per year.
  • Monthly membership at £7 per month.

The price you will pay is always shown clearly at checkout before you confirm. Membership gives you access to the full version of our journalism, including the evidence, documents, data and analysis behind our stories. Some content — including accountability findings, practical “what you can do” information, safety information, and the contact details of elected representatives and public officials — remains free to everyone.

6.4 Founding membership

During our founding window (the first 60 days from launch), annual membership is offered at the founding price of £70. If you join as a founding annual member, you will keep the £70 annual price for as long as your membership renews without interruption. If your membership lapses and you re-join later, the founding price may no longer be available.

6.5 How your membership starts

Your membership begins when we confirm your sign-up and your first payment is taken. We will send you a confirmation by email.

6.6 Automatic renewal

Memberships renew automatically: annual memberships each year, monthly memberships each month, at the price shown when you signed up (or, for founding members, the founding price you locked in). Payment is taken automatically using the card you provided. We will remind you before an annual renewal. You can cancel at any time before renewal to avoid the next payment (see 6.10).

6.7 Your right to cancel within 14 days, and immediate access

You have a legal right to cancel your membership within 14 days of joining (the “cooling-off period”) and receive a refund.

However, because your membership gives you immediate access to digital content, when you join you will be asked to agree that:

  • you want your membership and access to that content to start straight away, during the 14-day cooling-off period; and
  • you understand that, once access has started, you lose your right to cancel for a refund under the cooling-off rules.

If you ask us to start your access immediately and then cancel during the cooling-off period, we may charge you a reasonable amount for the access you have already had.

6.8 Price

The price of your membership is shown at checkout before you confirm. If we change our standard prices, this will not affect the price you are currently paying during your existing membership term. Any change to your price will be notified to you in advance and will only take effect at your next renewal, and you may cancel before it takes effect if you do not wish to continue.

6.9 Failed payments

If a renewal payment fails, we will let you know and ask you to update your payment details. If payment is not received within 7 days of our reminder, we may suspend your access until payment is made.

6.10 Cancelling your membership

You can cancel your membership at any time from your account page, or by emailing us. Cancelling stops future payments. When you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for; we do not provide refunds for the remainder of a paid period except where required by law (see 6.11). We will confirm your cancellation in writing.

6.11 Refunds

Other than the 14-day cooling-off right described in 6.7, and any other rights you have under UK consumer law, membership payments are non-refundable. Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

6.12 Our right to suspend or end your membership

We may suspend or end your membership if you breach these Terms or if payment is not made. Where we do so for reasons other than your breach, we will give you reasonable notice.

6.13 Patron membership

Our Patron tier is offered separately and is governed by its own terms, provided at the point of offer.

8. Limitation of Liability

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law.

Subject to that, our total liability to you in connection with your membership is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.

  • The editor’s decision is final.

11. General

If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest shall remain in effect.

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of English courts.
