New era begins at Battersea Power Station

Frank Gehry’s striking buildings bring life, legacy and landmark ambition to London

World-famous architect Frank Gehry will add two new sculptural buildings to London’s Battersea Power Station redevelopment, following planning approval from Wandsworth Council.

The next phase of the £9 billion regeneration project will see 306 new homes, new shops, a senior living community, and public amenities delivered by 2029, continuing the transformation of the iconic 42-acre site into a vibrant new town centre.

The upcoming buildings, Prospect Place 3 and 4, mark the second collaboration between Gehry Partners and Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC). They follow the firm’s earlier contribution to Prospect Place, the only UK residential buildings ever designed by Gehry. With distinctive white facades and flowing winter gardens, the latest additions continue Gehry’s reinterpretation of London’s Nash Terraces, offering a softer contrast to the industrial brick of the restored power station itself.

“I am very happy that the next phase of the Battersea project is underway,” Gehry said. “These two buildings will help our masterplan, which was designed to create the feeling of a neighbourhood, come to fruition.”

A standout feature of this new phase is the inclusion of senior living accommodation—Prospect Place 3 will provide purpose-built apartments for over-65s, to be managed by a specialist operator. This is a first for the development and part of a broader ambition to create a multigenerational urban community. Each building will have unique interiors, green roofs, and access to a new residents’ garden square.

The project also completes Electric Boulevard, London’s newest high street. When finished, the boulevard will include over 70,000 sq ft of commercial space for shops, cafés, and restaurants, adding to a lineup that already features Zara, Borough Kitchen, Boots Beauty and Massimo Dutti—with new names like WatchHouse and The Salad Project soon to follow. The new buildings will sit directly opposite the Northern Line’s Battersea Power Station entrance.

“This milestone is the next step in realising the long-term vision for Battersea Power Station,” said James Wixley, Head of Development at BPSDC. “We’re extending Gehry Partners’ distinctive architectural legacy, adding new homes while introducing senior living for the first time, and completing Electric Boulevard—London’s newest high street.”

A key part of the new phase is a 15,000 sq ft Community Hub, designed in partnership with Wandsworth Council and local stakeholders. This civic space will host cultural events and activities curated by a specialist operator. An expanded Bike Hub with 600 free spaces will also support sustainable transport to and from the area.

Frank Gehry: A Global Icon of Modern Architecture

Frank Gehry, founder of Gehry Partners, is widely regarded as one of the most important architects of the contemporary era. Born in Canada and based in Los Angeles, Gehry’s signature style—marked by bold, deconstructivist forms and imaginative use of materials—has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize.

His most famous works include:

  • Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain): a shimmering titanium-clad structure credited with transforming the Basque city into a global cultural destination.
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, USA): an acoustically sophisticated and visually striking performance venue.
  • Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris, France): a museum and cultural centre set in a futuristic glass “sailboat” form.
  • 8 Spruce Street (New York City, USA): a rippling stainless-steel residential tower in Lower Manhattan.
  • The Dancing House (Prague, Czech Republic): a playful building known locally as “Fred and Ginger.”

Known for turning architectural norms on their head, Gehry’s buildings often become instant landmarks—and his latest additions to Battersea are expected to do just that.

To date, the regeneration of Battersea Power Station has delivered over 2,200 homes, including 386 affordable units in partnership with Peabody. It’s now home to more than 150 retail and leisure outlets, and a growing office community that includes Apple’s 500,000 sq ft UK headquarters. With construction of this new phase expected to begin later this year, the development is set to create more than 400 additional jobs and continue shaping the future of Wandsworth’s newest town centre.
