From Monday, some midday trains between Waterloo and Wandsworth Town will not stop at the station. The disruption runs for five months, as lift installation begins on the £20m upgrade that will give the station step-free access for the first time.
Rush hours, Fridays, and weekends are unaffected throughout. The only trains that skip the station are those travelling from Waterloo towards Putney between 11am and 2pm, Monday to Thursday. The pattern changes from late July.
What changes, and when
The works run in two phases. From Monday until 26 July, trains heading from Waterloo towards Putney skip Wandsworth Town between 11am and 2pm on weekdays. From 27 July to 11 October, the direction reverses: trains heading towards Clapham Junction skip the station on Mondays only between 11am and 2pm. Tuesday to Thursday are unaffected in that second period.

If your train skips the station
Four bus routes connect Putney directly to Wandsworth Town. The 37 and 337 run from Upper Richmond Road near Putney station; the 220 and 270 run from Lower Richmond Road near Putney Bridge, dropping you at Southside Shopping Centre or Armoury Way. The journey takes about ten minutes, roughly the same time as staying on the train and backtracking.
About the works
The works are part of a £20m project to install lifts to all four platforms and open a new northern entrance on Odyssey Way, making Wandsworth Town step-free for the first time. Wandsworth Council’s share of the cost comes from developer contributions rather than council tax.
The station handles 3.75 million passengers a year and stays open throughout. When the project finishes in summer 2027, it will be one of the latest South Western Railway stations to gain step-free access. One stop south, East Putney is still waiting.
