From 11 May, some trains will skip Wandsworth Town station during midday hours while lifts are installed. The disruption runs for five months, but only affects a narrow window on weekdays.
Wandsworth Town will become fully accessible for the first time under a £20m upgrade bringing lifts to all platforms and a second entrance on Odyssey Way. The project is funded by the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme, Network Rail, and Wandsworth Council, whose share comes from developer contributions rather than council tax.
As we reported in November, the project took three years and significant cost increases to reach approval. The station stays open throughout, with completion expected by summer 2027.
From 11 May to 26 July, trains heading from Waterloo towards Putney will not stop at Wandsworth Town between 11am and 2pm, Monday to Thursday.
From 27 July to 11 October, the pattern reverses: trains heading towards Clapham Junction will skip the station on Mondays between 11am and 2pm. Tuesday to Thursday are unaffected in that period. In both phases, rush hours, Fridays and weekends run as normal.

Getting there by bus
If your train is skipping the station, the bus is quicker than doubling back by rail. Four routes connect Putney directly to Wandsworth Town.
The 37 and 337 run from Upper Richmond Road near Putney station. The 220 and 270 run from Lower Richmond Road and Putney Bridge, dropping you at Southside Shopping Centre or Armoury Way. The journey takes roughly ten minutes, compared with the 10 to 15 minutes added by staying on the train and backtracking.
Over 3.75 million passengers used Wandsworth Town in 2024-25, making it the 15th busiest station on the South Western Railway network. When the work finishes, it will have lifts to all four platforms and a new north entrance, making it the latest SWR station to gain step-free access. One stop down the line, East Putney is still waiting.
