Commuters traveling through southwest London are experiencing significant delays this morning following multiple transport incidents, including a fire alert at Southfields station and a faulty train blocking rail services to Shepperton.
Transport for London has confirmed severe delays on the District Line between Parsons Green and Wimbledon as emergency services responded to the incident at Southfields. The disruption is affecting thousands of passengers during the Monday morning commute.
The impact has extended to nearby Putney train station, where South Western Railway has closed Platform 2, with all London Waterloo services now departing from Platform 1 until further notice. The station closure is compounding travel difficulties for commuters trying to use alternative routes to avoid the District Line delays.
In a separate but compounding incident, South Western Railway has suspended all services between London Waterloo and Shepperton in both directions due to a faulty train blocking the line at Fulwell. Fleet maintenance teams are working to fix the fault, with disruption expected until 14:30 today.
The railway operator is accepting tickets on Transport for London bus services calling at Teddington, Fulwell, Hampton, Kempton Park, Sunbury, Upper Halliford and Shepperton. The dual incidents are creating severe travel chaos across southwest London, leaving many commuters with severely limited options.
The southwestern section of the District Line has been particularly hard hit, with TfL advising travelers to allow extra time for their journeys or consider alternative routes. Valid tickets are being accepted on London Buses, South Western Railway services, and the Mildmay Line to help affected passengers complete their journeys.
Adding to the morning’s travel chaos, the District Line is also experiencing minor delays between Tower Hill and Earl’s Court westbound due to an earlier faulty train at Barking.
TfL has confirmed that the rest of the District Line is operating with good service. The cause of the fire alert at Southfields has not yet been confirmed, and it’s unclear when normal service will resume on the affected section.
Passengers are urged to check TfL’s website or app and South Western Railway’s service updates for real-time information before traveling.
This is a developing story.
