Putney Train Station closed following major incident

Emergency services responded to a serious incident at Putney Station, with reports of a person struck by a train causing major disruption.

UPDATED Putney Train Station is closed following a serious incident that drew a significant emergency response and left train services in and out of the area severely disrupted.

Multiple ambulances, police vehicles, and incident response units are positioned outside the station. All platforms and entrances are sealed off, and a cordon remains in place. South Western Railway confirmed that the station is closed due to an “ongoing incident,” but no further details have been released.

Putney.news reporters at the scene also observed police officers stationed on Oxford Road, further down the tracks from the station, preventing members of the public from approaching the railway bridge or looking into the station area.

Emergency services remain on site, and the nature of the incident was not officially confirmed until the next morning. Yesterday afternoon, a train could be observed stationary underneath the Oxford Road bridge that was going eastward toward London Waterloo.

One person at the scene told us they had heard officers discussing a body on the tracks. This was later verified by the London Ambulance Service.

“We were called at 4.58pm yesterday to reports of an incident at Putney Railway Station, Putney High Street.

We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and London’s Air Ambulance.

The first of our crews arrived in three minutes. Our crews assisted our emergency services partners at the scene. Sadly, despite the best efforts of first responders, a patient died.”

The incident has affected the wider network, with services between Barnes and Wandsworth Town also impacted. Disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police confirmed:

“We were called to Putney Railway Station following reports of a person being struck by a train. Officers are currently working at the scene alongside paramedics. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

In a statement the next day, Tuesday 22 April, the British Transport Police noted:

“Officers were called to Putney railway station at around 5pm yesterday following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

This is the second major emergency incident in the area in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Putney Bridge was closed for several hours following a significant police operation that saw officers and emergency crews respond to a separate, unrelated incident.
