Young’s wants to bring the bar outside at the Coat and Badge

Residents have until 28 April to support or object to the outdoor bar application.

On Saturday afternoon, people were queuing outside the Coat and Badge on Lacy Road to get into the garden. Inside, a Boat Race singalong was in full swing. The spacious outside area, covered by a full awning and with screens for watching sport, was packed.

It is that kind of pub. Now Young’s wants to make the outdoor offer even easier to use.

The brewery has applied to vary the premises licence to add a dedicated bar servery in the outside area on the ground floor. At the moment, drinks served outside are carried out from the bar inside. If the application goes through, there will be a separate sales point in the garden.

The proposed hours for the outdoor bar are 10:00 to 23:20 Sunday to Friday. On Saturdays it could open at 08:00, closing at the same time as on other days. All other conditions on the licence would remain as they are.

The Coat and Badge was one of eight Wandsworth pubs identified in January as facing steep business rates increases, with its rateable value set to rise 17% from April 2026. Adding an outdoor bar ahead of summer is a practical way to get more out of a garden that, on a good Boat Race Saturday, clearly does not need much encouragement.

Anyone who wants to make representations about the application must write to the Wandsworth Licensing Authority by 28 April 2026. The licensing service is run jointly for Merton, Richmond and Wandsworth by the Regulatory Services Partnership, which is why the contact address is in Morden rather than Wandsworth. Representations can be sent by email to licensing@merton.gov.uk or by post to Regulatory Services Partnership, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, Surrey SM4 5DX. Anyone writing in must state the grounds for their representation.

The application is also listed on the Wandsworth licensing register. Young’s solicitors for the application are Poppleston Allen.
