Just two days left to comment on plan to ban cars from Putney Embankment

Putney Embankment has effectively been car free for three years because of the super sewer. The council plans to make that permanent.

There are just two days left to comment on Wandsworth Council’s plan to pedestrianise Putney Embankment by the pier.

The consultation was opened in November and will close on Tuesday 14 May – so if you want your views known, now is the time to do so. It is a simple online form that only takes a few minutes to complete.

The council has been trialling having the area between the Duke’s Head pub and the exit by Thai Square, going past the Star & Garter and Putney Pier, car free (see map above). It has used the fact that the area was closed on and off for three years as the new Thames super sewer was installed to see what impact any change may have had.

We now have a new mini-park (sat on top of the sewer) and the road and lead down to Putney Embankment and the Thames have been freshly cobblestoned; the question is whether residents want to make the area permanently closed off to traffic.

There is some potential there: making the embarkment car-free could open up it up as a pleasant gathering spot by the bridge and the river. And with work on the Star & Garter to turn in into a hotel finally moving forward after years of the building being boarded up, pedestrianisation could bring additional life to the area.

If you feel the same, or if you feel differently, let the council know. By Tuesday.
