UPDATED Wandsworth Bridge has been closed since approximately 1:30pm today following a police incident involving concern for the welfare of a man.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers are at the scene alongside London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade responding to reports of a person in distress on the bridge.
The closure is causing significant traffic disruption across Wandsworth and Putney, with congestion building on approach roads and traffic being diverted via Putney Bridge and Battersea Bridge.
Bus routes 28, 295 and C3 are on diversion due to the closure.
The incident began around 1pm and the bridge remains closed as emergency services continue their response. There is currently no indication of when the bridge will reopen.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. The A217 Wandsworth Bridge Road is experiencing heavy queuing traffic in both directions, with congestion extending to New King’s Road in Fulham.
Evening rush hour is expected to be significantly affected if the incident continues.
