UPDATED A woman was pulled from the Thames this morning and taken away by ambulance after a major emergency response on the Embankment.
A lifeboat from the RNLI’s new Wandsworth Riverside station brought her to the pier shortly after 8am. She was carried ashore on a stretcher and put into a waiting ambulance, which left at about 8.20am.
Her condition is stable.
Two London Fire Brigade engines, ambulances, two police cars and an incident response unit lined the Embankment outside the Star and Garter, and a police boat pulled in at the pier soon afterwards. The first fire engine left as the ambulance did.
The lifeboat crew at the scene told Putney.news they could not give any details. We have asked the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade for more information, and will update this story when they respond.
The Wandsworth Riverside crew is the second-busiest in the RNLI, and passed 200 call-outs for the year earlier this month.
UPDATE, 4pm: The Metropolitan Police has said the woman is in a stable condition in hospital.
Police were called at 7.07am on Thursday to concerns for the welfare of a woman on the Embankment. Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. A woman, aged 48, was “safely recovered from the water” and taken to hospital, where she remains stable, the force said.
