Where to watch England play tonight in Putney

Five screens, a rooftop and a garden, with kick-off at nine o’clock.

England kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign tonight at 9pm against Croatia, a rematch of the semi-final that ended in heartbreak in Moscow eight years ago.

England go in among the tournament favourites, currently third in the betting. Spain’s surprise draw with Curaçao yesterday is a reminder that nothing in this World Cup is going to plan.

There is a lot riding on tonight, and really only one way to watch it properly. Not on your sofa, not on your phone, but in a pub, with a pint and people around you. The screens are bigger, the sound is better, and the roar when England score is something you cannot get at home.

Putney is well set up. Here is our rundown.

On the High Street

The Spotted Horse is prepared for the game: five screens, including the “Beach Club” rooftop, with all three England fixtures up on the wall board. Cold pints, half-time games, and a proper old-school boozer. The board outside says “Secure your ‘Spot’ now,” so a walk-in is still possible, but book if you can. spottedhorse.co.uk

The Railway has lots of space, lots of TVs, and a genuine indoor match-day atmosphere. The roof terrace is an option if the weather holds. Its chalkboard tells you to book online or speak to staff to secure a spot. A slightly more polished setting than the average football pub, which suits it. therailwayputney.co.uk

Just off the High Street

The Coat & Badge on Lacy Road is the sporting pub. Huge covered outdoor space, big screens set for clear sightlines, and it will be absolutely rammed tonight, which is exactly the point. The one to pick if you want to be in the thick of it. thecoatandbadge.co.uk

The Jolly Gardeners, also on Lacy Road, has dressed for the occasion. World Cup bunting of national flags is strung across the windows, with a lush terrace outside and big screens in. The right choice if you want the atmosphere without the high-street intensity. thejollygardeners.co.uk

By the river

The Duke’s Head sits on Lower Richmond Road by the river, Putney’s Victorian riverside institution and Grade II listed. It has been promoting the World Cup since the tournament opened on 11 June. Best if you want to combine the match with a proper meal. dukesheadputney.com

Renovated Half Moon

East Putney Tavern on Upper Richmond Road is seconds from East Putney tube. Multi-floor, with a street terrace, it is ideal for large groups coming from east of the High Street.

Kick-off is 9pm. If you are walking in anywhere, aim to arrive by 8. Most of these are taking bookings, so go online now if you want a table.
