Three new recall notices have gone up in the TK Maxx window on Putney High Street since April. Two are power banks. The third is a children’s badminton set.
One for the kids
A badminton set. £7.99. The shuttlecock lights up, which is why there are batteries in it, which is why it is now in the recall window.
The batteries are button cells, the small flat ones from watches and key fobs, and they are the reason this recall matters. Swallowed button batteries are one of the most serious dangers in child safety: they can cause severe internal burns, and two children in the UK have died this way. The battery compartment on the shuttlecock is meant to be sealed with a screw that stays attached. It doesn’t. If you have one of these at home, stop using it now and take it back.
The Misco Sports Light-Up Racket Set was sold at TK Maxx and Homesense between March and April this year, model MT2287, recall reference PRSP270028. Return it to any TK Maxx or Homesense store for a full refund.
If you think a child has swallowed a button battery, go straight to A&E or call 999. Do not wait for symptoms. The Child Accident Prevention Trust has full guidance, including why even flat batteries are dangerous.
Also in the window, and also aimed at children: a Bath Bomb Set from the film Frozen, sold for £6.99 between March and June 2024. The decorative tag on the Elsa shower puff contains phthalates, chemical compounds that may have adverse health effects. After Peppa’s Nightmare Before Christmas in April, Elsa has now also been let down by TK Maxx. That notice comes down on 26 June, so check soon.
Five and counting
Two more power bank ranges have joined the recall window since April. Both have the same fault: internal wiring that may not be securely attached, which can come loose during use and cause overheating or fire.
If this sounds familiar, it should. In April, we reported three power bank recalls from the same store, the Poppy, the Pom/Magpower and the Tek Squad. Same fault. Loose wiring. TK Maxx has now recalled five power bank ranges in under eight weeks, and at some point this stops being bad luck.
The new ones: the Pom Power Banks recall covers seven product lines (Titan Charge, Mag Power+, Power 4 Connect, Elite Mag Power, Mag Power Pd+, Pd Multi Charge and Mag Power), sold between August 2024 and May 2026 at £19.99. The Power Evo Wireless Charging Power Bank Volt 5 covers two models, sold between February and August 2025 at £12.99. The full model number list is below. If you bought a power bank from TK Maxx in the past two years, it is worth a minute of your time.
The wider picture explains why this keeps happening. A power bank is a lithium-ion battery in a plastic case, and a cheap power bank is a cheap lithium-ion battery in a plastic case. Budget products cut corners on the protection circuits that stop the battery overcharging and overheating, and on the quality of the cells themselves. London Fire Brigade attended 521 fires involving lithium-ion batteries last year, a 28% rise, with three people killed. Most involve e-bikes and e-scooters, but the underlying problem, poorly made cells with inadequate protection, is exactly what keeps appearing in the TK Maxx window.
It is not only a budget-brand problem. Anker, one of the better-known names in power banks, recalled three of its own models for the same overheating fault. But it is mostly a budget problem, and the advice is simple: buy an established brand, check for UKCA or CE marking, be sceptical of big capacity claims at small prices, and never charge a power bank overnight, under a pillow, or covered.
TK Maxx has, across two stories now, provided a reasonably comprehensive education in why not to buy a cheap power bank. The tuition, at least, is free.

I actually wonder whether it’s a business model for TKMaxx, buy cheap products, possibly knowing there could be problems, sell as many as possible, stick up a recall notice to comply, confident you won’t have to refund as many as you sold.
