The speed limit on Roehampton Lane drops to 20mph this Saturday (February 28) under a Transport for London order signed last week.
The change affects the entire A306 red route between Upper Richmond Road and Kingston Road, plus all side roads connecting to it. TfL published the formal order today giving residents 48 hours’ notice before implementation.
As we reported earlier this month, the speed cut was confirmed as part of TfL’s Phase 3 speed limits programme. The corridor currently has a 30mph limit.
Roehampton Lane is classified as a red route (TfL-managed) despite running through residential Roehampton. The designation explains why TfL rather than Wandsworth Council controls speed limits on what appears to be a local street. The route carries significant bus traffic and provides access to Richmond Park.
There are two speed cameras near the top of Roehampton Lane where it joins the A3 that all but certain to catch a large number of people used to travelling at much faster speeds, especially as you come down the hill into Roehampton.

The order, signed by TfL’s Performance and Planning Manager Matt Standell on 19 February, cites the Mayor’s Vision Zero programme as the rationale for the change.
“The reason for introducing the Order is to reduce road danger in line with the Mayor for London’s Vision Zero ambition to eliminate fatal and serious injury collisions from London’s roads,” the order states.
New 20mph signs will replace existing 30mph markers from Saturday. Speed cameras are already in place along the route, shown on TfL’s map of the changes.
The 48-hour gap between today’s public notice and Saturday’s implementation represents the shortest legal notice period for traffic order changes.
Excellent news!
They want to get rid of private vehicles altogether
Make it harder and harder to get around, LTNs, impassable junctions, lowering speed limits unnecessarily etc..
Where is the formal order stating that the 20mph limit is being implemented on 28th February published? Why haven’t you provided a link/source?
I have a letter from TFL, dated 11th February, advising that the 20mph speed limit will come into operation on 20th March.
I hope this article isn’t misinformation…….
I wish they’d change me than just a bloody signpost. So long as the road is wide ajd straight, people are just gonna do 30mph and hit the brakes when they reach the cameras.
