Three arrested after Wandsworth Prison drone smuggling attempt thwarted

Police intercept suspected contraband delivery in early morning operation.
Drone dropping drugs into Wandsworth Prison

Police arrested three men in the early hours of Tuesday morning after intercepting a suspected drone smuggling operation at HMP Wandsworth.

Officers responded to reports of a drone flying over the prison wall from the adjacent cemetery at 02:50am on January 13. When police arrived on Magdalen Road and spotted a vehicle, the occupants sped off before being stopped on Loxley Road.

All three men were detained and searched after officers detected a smell of cannabis in the vehicle. Police found a Sainsbury’s bag near the car containing a large number of wrapped items.

The three occupants were arrested on suspicion of conveying prohibited items into a prison. The seized items are being examined.

Active policing of persistent security threat

The incident demonstrates ongoing police efforts to prevent contraband entering the Category B prison, which houses approximately 1,500 men.

Tuesday’s arrests mark the second high-profile drone smuggling attempt at the prison in six months. In July 2025, a drone was caught dropping a package into Wandsworth Prison as security concerns continued to mount.

The Metropolitan Police has urged residents to remain vigilant, asking anyone who spots a Wandsworth Prison drone or suspicious activity near HMP Wandsworth to report it immediately via 999.

The use of drones to smuggle drugs, weapons and mobile phones into prisons has become an increasingly sophisticated challenge for authorities. The early morning timing and cemetery location suggest careful planning by the suspects.

Latest in series of security failures

The drone interception comes as HMP Wandsworth continues to face scrutiny over security and management failures.

In November 2025, the prison’s 20th death since 2021 prompted a damning Prisons and Probation Ombudsman report highlighting healthcare failures and inadequate emergency response. The same month, a Justice Committee report on prison overcrowding specifically cited HMP Wandsworth as an example of systemic dysfunction.

The prison suffered two major security breaches in 2023 and 2025. Former soldier Daniel Khalife escaped in September 2023 by strapping himself under a food delivery van, and in November 2025 the prison mistakenly released Algerian national Brahim Kaddour Cherif, who was later arrested.

Tuesday’s arrests show active police monitoring of the prison perimeter, with officers apparently conducting surveillance of the cemetery area when the drone was spotted.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests but did not release the names of the three men detained. The investigation continues.

HMP Wandsworth is located on Heathfield Road in Wandsworth. Anyone with information about suspicious activity near the prison should contact police via 999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
