Families invited to celebrate new under-fives play area in Putney

December 5 launch includes free sessions and seasonal activities.
Soft Play area

Families with young children can celebrate the opening of Putney Leisure Centre’s new soft play area at a free festive event on Friday, December 5.

The facility, designed for toddlers under five, features sensory stations and imaginative play corners where little ones can climb, crawl and explore in a safe environment.

The opening day runs from 10am to 12.30pm and includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by activities including face painting, a bouncy castle, colouring competitions, and an appearance by Mrs Claus. Free refreshments will be available.

Free soft play sessions will run from 12pm to 6pm on opening day, but families must book slots in advance through the leisure centre. Access for All members can always use the facility free of charge.

Temporary now, permanent later

The current installation is temporary while the council gathers feedback from families to shape the final design. A permanent soft play area for under-fives is planned for summer 2026.

The project forms part of Wandsworth Council’s £24 million investment in improving leisure facilities across the borough. It also supports the council’s Year of Play initiative and Wandsworth Moves Together strategy, which aim to make staying active easier for local residents.

Some of the decisions around the development are proving to be more controversial than others: owner of The Kitchen cafe last week sued the council over what she says in an effort to kick her out to make way for a new cafe while not acknowledging her rights as a tenant for the past decade.
