Squatters told: pick your stuff up today or it’s gone

Legal notices give illegal Putney High Street occupants a day to collect mattresses, clothes and food.

Squatters cleared from Putney High Street have been given one day to collect their stuff before it gets binned.

Legal notices on the former Ramna restaurant windows listed the possessions left behind when bailiffs and the police booted them out a day earlier. It gave the squatters until the end of Thursday to pick them up. The notice covered mattresses, clothes and food left behind during the clearance.

It’s a sign of the firm line that landlord Crown Properties has taken during the repossession process and confirmed reports that they were cleared out swiftly.

Property firm Mosser Limited posted the official warning under the Torts Act 1977. One legal notice on the restaurant listed four mattresses, clothes, shoes and bags of food; a second listed two mattresses, two drawer units, clothes and shoes, and “food items” left in the flats above.

Anyone wanting their stuff back was told to give one day’s notice through a provided mobile number. The formal process follows strict legal rules for handling abandoned property after illegal occupation.

The notice represents the end of the squatter crisis that has consumed the High Street for four months, and likely been behind the recent increase in crime, especially theft. The CEO of Positively Putney, Nicola Grant, confirmed to Putney.news that businesses now believe Putney High Street to be squatter free.

The Torts Act sets clear rules for what happens to abandoned stuff after illegal occupation. Property managers must serve proper notice and allow reasonable collection time before binning it.

The building remains secured while its owners plan construction of a new hotel and retail building, due to start in October This closes a chapter that brought major disruption to one of Putney’s busiest shopping areas.
