Calling all creatives: help reinvent Putney’s new writing scene

Writers and performers urged to shape the future after showcase triumph.

Writers, directors, actors and theatre enthusiasts are being invited to help shape the future of a growing new writing initiative based in Putney.

Putney Playwrights — the new writing strand of Putney Theatre Company (PTC) — is holding an open meeting at Putney Arts Theatre on Tuesday 2 July at 7.30pm, and organisers are urging both returning creatives and fresh faces to come along.

The event will be a chance to reflect on the success of First Look, PTC’s recent new writing showcase, and to gather ideas for how to make the next edition even stronger. Anyone who took part in First Look — or is simply curious about writing or developing new theatre — is welcome.

“We’d love to hear what worked, what didn’t quite land, and how we can improve,” said Kimberley Andrews, who posted the call-out on the London Playwrights Blog. “This group is still relatively new, so it’s the perfect time to take stock and plan ahead — together.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring constructive ideas and potential solutions for any challenges. The organisers hope the event will act as both a creative check-in and a springboard for future productions.

The First Look showcase was hailed as “something of a triumph” for the local theatre community — thanks in part to direction and coordination from Roger Blitz and Rob Wallis — and the team are aiming to raise the bar even higher next time around.

Those interested can simply turn up on the night or email the New Writing team at ptcnewwriting@gmail.com with any questions.
