Wandsworth bursts into bloom with new garden contest

With the Putney Society’s usual competition paused, residents still have a chance to grow something special.

Green-fingered residents across Putney and beyond are being encouraged to pick up their trowels and turn their neighbourhoods into blooming showcases, as Wandsworth Council launches its new Wandsworth in Bloom gardening competition.

The event provides a colourful alternative following confirmation that the Putney Society’s long-running Front Gardens competition will not go ahead this year — leaving a gap in the borough’s summer calendar for amateur horticulturists.

Now, as part of Wandsworth’s celebrations as London Borough of Culture 2025, the council is calling on individuals, schools, community groups and businesses to take part in a new, inclusive gardening initiative aimed at celebrating neighbourhood pride, biodiversity, and creativity.

“You don’t need a big garden or a lot of experience, just passion and a bit of imagination,” said Cllr Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment. “We want everyone to get involved — from balcony growers to whole streets.”

A Contest for Every Kind of Gardener

The competition offers 11 categories, ranging from Best Front Garden to Best Allotment Plot, with special prizes also available for the Tallest Sunflower — open to nurseries and primary schools — and the Most Vibrant Borough of Culture Garden. Shortlisted entries will also compete for Best in Show and the People’s Choice award.

Community spirit is at the heart of the initiative. Entrants are encouraged to team up with neighbours, brighten up shopfronts, and even transform care home courtyards or youth centres into green sanctuaries.

Entries Close 30 June

The competition is free to enter and open to everyone — whether you’re an experienced gardener or trying out your first tomato plant. Judges, including local gardening experts, will review the entries in early July, with winners celebrated at a dedicated awards event later in the summer. Prizes include gardening vouchers and equipment.
