After a month of improvement works, Putney Leisure Centre’s main swimming pool and health suite have officially reopened.
The works, which closed the pool throughout March, upgraded the building’s air handling systems and installing energy-efficient LED lighting, part of a broader push by Wandsworth Council to improve energy efficiency across its leisure facilities.
The new air handling system should improve air quality, creating a more comfortable swimming environment by maintaining consistent temperatures. The LED lighting upgrades will significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, aligning with the council’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.
While the improvements are welcome, the closure has caused some disruption for regular users. Nearby centres in Tooting, Latchmere, Balham, and Kingston provided alternative swimming options during the downtime, with free access for members and pay-as-you-go options for others.
Facilities
The works began in early March and we detailed the plans in a story and encouraged residents to check for updates (Read more here).
Putney Leisure Centre, managed by Places Leisure on behalf of Wandsworth Council, offers a wide range of facilities in addition to the pool, including a gym, group exercise studios, squash courts, and a health suite with sauna and steam rooms. It is a popular destination for residents of all ages, providing fitness, swim lessons, and family activities.
Now reopened, the centre is welcoming swimmers back and encouraging residents to take advantage of the updated, more sustainable environment. The hope is that the improvements will improve people’s experience and support healthier lifestyles in the borough.
