Putney Leisure Centre pool will be closed during March: Update

Putney Lesiure Centre will be closed this month to install a new filtration system

Putney Leisure Centre’s main swimming pool and health suite are temporarily closed for essential improvement works this month.

The closure began this week and is scheduled to last throughout the month, with a planned reopening at the start of April. Below are the key details on why the closure is happening, when the facilities will reopen, and where you can swim in the meantime.

Official Reason for Closure

The main pool and health suite have been closed to allow for significant maintenance and upgrades. Wandsworth Council is replacing and upgrading the pool hall’s air handling system.

This work will improve air quality and better regulate temperature in the pool area, creating a more comfortable environment for swimmers. In addition, the upgrades will make the centre more energy-efficient and help reduce its carbon footprint.

These improvements are part of an investment in the leisure centre to ensure high-quality facilities for the community.

Reopening Timeline

The maintenance period runs through March. The pool and health suite closed on Monday 3 March and are expected to remain out of use for the duration of the works.

All affected areas are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday 1 April, once the upgrades are completed. Swimming lessons at Putney Leisure Centre are paused during the closure and will resume from 1 April onward. Other parts of the centre, such as the gym and dry-side fitness classes, remain open as usual during the pool closure.

Alternative Swimming Options

During the pool’s closure, swimmers are encouraged to use other nearby leisure centres that offer swimming facilities. Local alternatives include:

• Tooting Leisure Centre

• Latchmere Leisure Centre

• Balham Leisure Centre

• Malden Centre (Kingston-upon-Thames)

Members of Putney Leisure Centre can use these pools as part of their membership at no extra cost. Casual (pay-as-you-go) users are also welcome at the above centres, with standard session fees applying. These alternative pools will allow swimmers to continue their routine until Putney’s pool reopens in early April.
