Roehampton Children’s Library has been awarded a high commendation in the prestigious British Book Awards 2025, recognizing its exceptional contributions to children’s literacy, community engagement, and innovative programming.

The British Book Awards, also known as the “Nibbies,” celebrate excellence in publishing and literature across the UK and Ireland. The Library of the Year category honours institutions that demonstrate outstanding service, inclusive initiatives, and strong community outreach.

A Revamped Space for the Community

Roehampton Children’s Library recently underwent a complete renovation as part of the ‘Revive Roehampton’ project, aiming to create a more welcoming and inclusive space for local families. The refurbishment included more diverse book stock, eye-catching displays, and newly designed wallpaper to enhance the library’s atmosphere.

Children’s librarian October Jones, who led the transformation, expressed both surprise and pride at the commendation.

“It’s a huge project but it’s been a real labour of love. I was gobsmacked to hear we’d been commended – I almost didn’t submit the application because I didn’t think it was ‘big’ enough… we are ecstatic at the recognition from such a prestigious award.”

Expanding Services and Activities

In addition to the renovation, Roehampton Children’s Library has introduced an expanded timetable featuring creative and educational programming. New offerings include:

  • Creative writing workshops
  • An after-school club
  • Comic book workshops
  • A dedicated schools’ programme
  • Family reading events that provide parents with tips on engaging their children with books

These initiatives complement existing popular activities such as Baby Rhyme Time sessions, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, Play Reading Groups, IT support sessions, Lego & Duplo Club, and Knit and Natter gatherings.

The commendation places Roehampton among the UK’s top libraries, with the overall Library of the Year award set to be announced at the British Book Awards ceremony on May 12 at Grosvenor House.
