Yes, it’s an AI-created image of a street party. Looks fun though

It will be the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May and London has chosen to celebrate it in age-old fashion: by throwing street parties.

The early May Bank Holiday on Monday 5 May has been chosen as the ideal time for nationwide festivities, providing the perfect opportunity for us all as neighbours to unite in joyous celebration as we mark the end of World War II in Europe.

Given the current situation in Ukraine and related global politics, it’s all the more important for us to get together, have a good time, and remember that what connects us is so much greater than what separates us. The good news is that the usual £64 fee to hold a street party will be waived the whole 3-5 May weekend.

So what are you waiting for? Street Parties are, by definition, a neighbourhood event. So get on your local WhatsApp group and send them this story.

Why Host a Street Party?

Street parties are a cherished British tradition, fostering community spirit and creating lasting memories.

They offer a chance for neighbours to connect, children to play safely, and everyone to enjoy streets free from motor traffic, contributing to reduced air pollution and a healthier environment.

Wandsworth Council is encouraging residents to hold street parties reminiscent of those that took place eight decades ago.

Additional Considerations:
  • Insurance: While not mandatory, obtaining insurance is advisable.
  • Risk Assessment: A formal risk assessment isn’t required, but organizers should consider potential risks and plan accordingly.
  • Licenses: Licenses for alcohol, entertainment, or food sales are generally unnecessary unless the event involves selling these items.
  • Street Closure: Organizers are responsible for arranging proper signage and barriers to close the street safely during the event.

Putney’s Rich Tradition of Street Parties

Putney has a vibrant history of hosting memorable street parties. During the coronation of Charles & Camilla in May 2023, numerous street parties were held across SW15.

The council waived road closure fees and provided grants to some organizers, resulting in 144 events across the borough over the weekend. The celebrations were marked by glorious sunshine, with local dignitaries visiting many events, and residents of all ages coming together to mark the occasion.

By embracing the opportunity to host a street party for VE Day 2025, residents can continue Putney’s proud tradition of community celebrations, strengthening bonds and creating new memories together.
