Dog walkers and residents strolling to Barnes from Putney now have a delightful Viennese café to stop off at on the way.

Kaffee has just opened in the converted chapel to the right of Putney Lower Common Cemetery and offers a peaceful respite, plus Austrian treats and a wide range of drinks. Putney.news popped in to taste a sample.

One of the loveliest aspects of this part of Putney is how you can forget you’re in London at all, and so it is with Kaffee which has an outside seating area to the back of the building and two cosy and peaceful rooms in the front, complete with stained glass windows.

No doubt thanks to its thick stone walls, the café is extremely peaceful and has been tastefully decorated, with a minimalistic but ancient warmth to the place. The pastries range from pain au chocolats to doughnuts and are, as you might expect, delicious. There are 10 different types of coffee referred to by their German names, but with explanations, except the ubiquitous flat white which, it is noted, is on the menu “because we have to.”

There are also teas, juices and hot chocolates. But the big draw of the place is the inside room which are a perfect place to rest up for a while before heading back out through the common. You’d be well advised to try it next time you’re in this part of Putney.
