The Labour Party’s Leonie Cooper has been elected to a third term on the London Assembly representing Merton and Wandsworth Borough.

Cooper saw her vote increase by 2.3 per cent to 44 per cent of voters, with 77,235 Londoners putting her down as their choice. Cooper was first elected to the London Assembly in 2016 and for a decade before that was a councillor on Wandsworth Council.

She currently serves as chair of the Assembly’s Economy Committee, and is also deputy chair of its Environment Committee. Her victory was expected.

In an echo of the broader national picture, Conservative candidate Ellie Cox saw her vote fall by 5.4 per cent to 28.3 per cent and came second.

The Liberal Democrat candidate Sue Wixley came third with 21,418 votes, an increase of 1.2 per cent on the last election where she was also the candidate, and 12.2 per cent of the total vote. That pushed the Green’s Pippa Maslin into fourth place with a 1.7 per cent drop and 19,124 votes in total.

Reform UK’s Tania Marszalek came last but registered the largest increase of all parties, gaining 2.9 per cent to win 8,063 votes with 4.6 per cent of the total vote.
