The Met has issues a flooding risk for Putney

A flood alert has been issued by The Met Office covering the entire Thames bank from Putney Bridge past Barnes, Twickenham and through to Teddington Weir.

Putney is far from the only area affected: Storm Kathleen has brought a massive wave of bad weather, with flood and wind alerts issued across the country, including a number of ‘danger to life’ warnings in coastal areas.

The River Arun burst its banks in West Sussex sparking evacuations, Cornish beach huts have been washed into the sea, and the Environment Agency has over 200 alerts for ‘possible’ flooding with nearly 100 warnings for ‘expected’ flooding.

River levels were already running high as a result of spring tides, with local residents sharing pictures online of the Thames Path being completely overrun by water, but Tuesday tonight and Wednesday are expected to be worse.

“Flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths is expected, which may exist for one to two hours either side of high tide,” the Met has warned, adding that, “flooding of properties is not expected.”

It went on: “We believe there is a possibility of flooding for Putney Embankment (SW15), Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green (W4), Thames Bank at Mortlake (SW14), Ranelagh Drive (TW1), Friars Lane and Water Lane (TW9), Riverside and The Embankment at Twickenham, and the Towpath below Teddington Lock.”
