St Margaret’s Church pathway gets major upgrade

St Margaret's Church, Putney - new pathway being installed

St Margaret’s Church on Putney Park Lane is getting a much-needed pathway upgrade, with contractors currently working to resurface the main entrance route to the Victorian building.

The work, being carried out by Resin London Driveways, involves excavating and replacing the worn pathway that leads to the church entrance. The project aims to improve accessibility and make the approach to the 150-year-old building safer for visitors and worshippers.

St Margaret’s, designed by W. Allen Dixon in 1872, began life as a private Baptist chapel before becoming a Presbyterian church and finally being dedicated as an Anglican church in 1912. The distinctive building sits in leafy grounds off Putney Park Lane and serves as a community hub, hosting regular services, a weekly homeless shelter with Glass Door, and various community activities.

The pathway improvements are the latest in ongoing maintenance work at the church, which earlier this year saw its community hall refreshed by local builders’ merchant Leyland’s Putney store.

The church describes itself as “a diverse and friendly community in leafy West Putney” and runs services on Wednesdays and Sundays, with the church office open Monday to Thursday.

The Reverend Dr Brutus Green serves as vicar, and the church is part of the Wandsworth Deanery in the Southwark Diocese. It’s also a member of Inclusive Church and Churches Together in Putney and Roehampton.
