A Spaceship has landed at 188 Upper Richmond Road, and for the first time in nearly two years there’s visible work going on at the location.
What it actually is though remains a mystery: there’s no website, no social media account, no menu anywhere online. Menu? Yes because the business’ only public trace, a listing on Uber Eats, has shown it as closed since 29 May. Which is strange as it’s never opened.
We pulled the records. The address has seen two planning applications since its previous incarnation as Lauriston’s estate agents. The first was to install ventilation needed to serve food from the unit. It was filed in January 2025 and refused the following month.
A revised version, this time bundled with alterations to the shopfront, went in last December and was approved in February this year. But then nothing happened. The applicant is one Faisal Mohamedali, with Proun Architects acting as agent. Neither has said what Spaceship will be.
The council’s food hygiene register lists Spaceship as a restaurant, cafe or canteen. Its rating is currently “Awaiting Inspection”, consistent with a business that has registered but not yet had its first visit.
Situated between Studio Pilates and Hamptons, it is the latest unit to change hands on a stretch of Upper Richmond Road that has seen plenty of turnover lately, including a chip shop that reopened further along the road this week.
There has also been movement on other sites: a long-boarded up building a few doors down is finally moving forward – this time toward demolition.
When it comes to the Spaceship name, it’s worth pointing out that Putney already has a Rocket pub, down by the river. Until recently it also had a sci-fi memorabilia shop, Blake’s Heaven, on Lower Richmond Road, before the lease ran out.
Whether Spaceship has any link to Gordon Ramsay’s “Street Pod”, a spaceship-themed dining pod at his Bread Street Kitchen & Bar in the City, remains unconfirmed.
