Missing since Tuesday, the black Labrador is home after a search that crossed the entirety of south London.

Astra is home.

The black Labrador with the pale amber eyes, who slipped away from a dog walker near Palewell Park last Tuesday evening and set off one of the most determined community searches south-west London has seen, is back with her family, fit and well.

Her owners shared the news on Saturday evening, with a short video of Astra back on her own floor and a message saying they could scarcely believe it. After what they described as a ‘short holiday in south-east London’, they wrote, the dog was home and looking well.

What happened in between is, for now, a story the family are not able to tell in full. They have said the matter is with the police, and asked for a little space to take in an extraordinary few days. Putney.news will report more when there is more that can properly be said.

What can be told now is what happened in the open, across five days, and it is quite a story.

Hundreds came together

It began with a handful of neighbours in an overgrown corner of Palewell Park, next to Richmond Park, and it did not stay small for long. A co-ordinating group set up at thirteen minutes past three on Thursday morning, in the small hours of the second night, passed 350 members within a day and a half.

Volunteers walked slow, silent lines through woodland and waded the length of Beverley Brook. A thermal-imaging drone flew over the park by day, and again at two in the morning. Posters went into schools, nurseries, stables, shops and railway stations, from Chiswick to Croydon.

Riders in Richmond Park were asked to keep watch from the saddle. A specialist tracking dog was brought in. Doorbell clips were gathered, cross-checked and pieced into a route.

More than 200 of those people joined in actively, from across East Sheen, Barnes, Putney and Clapham, with a few following anxiously from abroad. Most of them had never met the dog they were looking for.

Somewhere in those five days, a missing black Labrador became the most talked-about dog in the area: a lost-pet appeal that turned into something closer to a neighbourhood operation, with its own maps, its own night shifts, and its own quiet rule about not calling her name in case she bolted.

That, in the end, is the part worth holding onto while the rest of the story waits. A dog went missing, and a large part of a city decided that finding her mattered.

Astra, for her part, is home, and after a few days away from her family she is, by every account, thrilled to be back.
