England Complete Perfect Autumn with Dramatic Argentina Victory
England – Autumn Nations Series England 27-23 Argentina (Twickenham) – Sunday, November 23
England extended their winning streak to an astonishing 11 consecutive Test matches with a nervy 27-23 victory over Argentina at a packed Twickenham, completing a perfect four-from-four autumn campaign. The Red Rose equaled their winning run from Sir Clive Woodward’s golden era in 2000-01, heading into the Six Nations on an extraordinary wave of momentum despite being tested to their limits by a spirited Pumas side.
Steve Borthwick’s men raced into a 17-3 half-time lead through George Ford’s early drop goal and tries from Max Ojomoh and Imisi Feyi-Waboso, but Argentina roared back in the second half with tries from Matias Piccardo and Rodrigo Isgro. The closing stages descended into chaos as the Pumas scored in the 80th minute to set up a grandstand finish, with England clinging on desperately as Argentina launched wave after wave of attacks in search of a dramatic equalizer.
Ojomoh was named man of the match on his full debut, scoring one try and creating two others in a performance that will have delighted his father Steve, a former England international. Henry Slade’s 66th-minute try and Ford’s late penalty ultimately proved decisive, sealing victories over Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Argentina in what has been the most successful November campaign in England’s recent history.
FOOTBALL
Jimenez Rescues Fulham as Chelsea March On
Fulham FC – Premier League Fulham 1-0 Sunderland (Craven Cottage) – Saturday, November 22
Raul Jimenez’s 84th-minute winner rescued Fulham from the jaws of the relegation zone with a desperately needed 1-0 victory over high-flying Sunderland in torrential rain at Craven Cottage. The Mexican striker prodded home Samuel Chukwueze’s perfectly-weighted cross to spare Marco Silva’s side after they had dominated proceedings but squandered a host of opportunities in their search for a fourth win of the season.
Fulham fired 24 shots at the Sunderland goal but managed only five on target, with Harry Wilson dragging wide from 18 yards in what appeared to be the hosts’ best chance before Jimenez’s late intervention. Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs made four saves to keep the Black Cats in the contest, including denying Kevin in a one-on-one scenario in the 23rd minute, as Regis Le Bris’ side defended resolutely with their five-man backline.
The victory lifts Fulham to 14th and crucially opens up breathing space from the trap door, while Sunderland’s winless run extended to three matches. The Black Cats, who had been targeting a push toward the top four, drop to sixth and face the prospect of sliding as low as 10th depending on other results. A brief scuffle broke out after the final whistle between staff members from both camps, underlining the frustrations felt by the visitors after their unbeaten run of five games came to an end.
Chelsea Cruise to Second Place with Clinical Burnley Victory
Chelsea FC – Premier League Burnley 0-2 Chelsea (Turf Moor) – Saturday, November 22
Chelsea climbed to second in the Premier League and moved within three points of leaders Arsenal with a comfortable 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened Burnley, extending their winning league run to three matches. Pedro Neto’s superb 37th-minute header from Jamie Gittens’ excellent cross opened the scoring, before Enzo Fernandez sealed the points with a powerful close-range finish in the 88th minute after fine work by substitute Marc Guiu.
Enzo Maresca’s side controlled proceedings throughout at Turf Moor without ever needing to reach top gear against a Burnley side who managed just two harmless shots on target. The hosts felt aggrieved over a bizarre first-half incident when Trevoh Chalobah appeared to handle a goal-kick from Robert Sanchez, but referee Peter Bankes ruled the ball was not yet in play and VAR chose not to intervene.
The victory caps a superb November for Chelsea as they emerge as genuine title contenders, with their momentum building impressively under Maresca. Burnley, meanwhile, suffered a third consecutive defeat that leaves Scott Parker’s side 17th and in danger of slipping into the relegation zone, their home form having deserted them at a crucial stage of the season.
Teenage Debutant’s Double Sinks Wimbledon
AFC Wimbledon – League One AFC Wimbledon 1-2 Wigan Athletic (Cherry Red Records Stadium) – Saturday, November 22
Eighteen-year-old substitute Harrison Bettoni enjoyed a dream League One debut with a match-winning brace as Wigan came from behind to earn their first away league victory of the season with a 2-1 triumph at AFC Wimbledon. The teenager’s introduction transformed the contest in heavy rain at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, turning the match on its head after Alistair Smith had given the hosts a 70th-minute lead.
Wimbledon had weathered Wigan’s early pressure, with Fraser Murray and Dara Costelloe both missing presentable opportunities for the visitors in a tight first half. Ryan Johnson headed wide from Steve Seddon’s free-kick as the Dons threatened, but clear chances were scarce in torrential conditions that made quality football difficult.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Smith scored for the hosts, but Bettoni struck twice in the 77th and 87th minutes to complete a remarkable turnaround for Ryan Lowe’s struggling side. The defeat extends Wimbledon’s recent slump, with Johnnie Jackson’s men now suffering three consecutive league losses after their impressive start to the season had propelled them into playoff contention. They drop to seventh, while Wigan climb away from the relegation zone with a precious three points.
