Putney braces for weekend chaos as roadworks collide with traffic light overhaul

Half-term timing offers brief respite before Tuesday’s make-or-break morning commute test.

Putney High Street faces significant traffic disruption from today through Wednesday 29 October as roadworks begin at 87 Putney High Street, where the old EE shop stood next to Metro Bank.

The timing coincides with half-term week, which should provide some relief with many families away and no school-run traffic clogging local roads during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Warning signs on Putney Bridge have been alerting drivers to expect delays throughout the five-day period as electrical and water works take place outside the now-vacant unit.

The roadworks come as Transport for London (TfL) prepares to install new traffic signal controllers at Putney Bridge junction on Monday 27 October – a change that hopefully will finally ease the chronic congestion that has plagued Putney.

But Tuesday 28 October will be the day that matters most. With the new traffic light chips installed and morning rush hour in full force, residents will get their first real indication of whether TfL’s upgrade can handle Putney’s traffic corridor – albeit with fewer school-run vehicles on the road.

As previously reported, the new system is designed to improve traffic flow through the junction. Tuesday morning will serve as the first meaningful test of whether the investment delivers results.

Motorists are advised to expect delays throughout the weekend and early week, with alternative routes likely to be busier than usual.
