London’s football clubs delivered a weekend to remember, with both AFC Wimbledon and Fulham showcasing the capital’s trademark resilience in contrasting but equally impressive displays.

While the Dons secured a magnificent 2-0 victory over promotion-chasing Barnsley to continue their excellent start to life back in League One, Fulham demonstrated their own fighting spirit by clawing back a dramatic equalizer against Manchester United at Craven Cottage.

Fulham 1-1 Manchester United

Fulham secured a valuable point against Manchester United in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage today, continuing their solid start to the Premier League season.

Manchester United took the lead just before the hour mark when Leny Yoro’s header from Bruno Fernandes’ corner deflected off Rodrigo Muniz and into the net, giving the visitors their first goal of the new campaign. The breakthrough came after Bruno Fernandes had erlier missed a penalty – controversially given by VAR some time after the incident – shockingly blasting the ball over the crossbar in what proved to be a crucial moment.

Matheus Cunha was the star of Manchester United’s lively opening, with the Brazilian creating several early chances and impressing throughout the first half. The visitors dominated the early proceedings but couldn’t capitalize on their superiority.

However, Fulham showed depth of character to level the score. Emile Smith Rowe came off the bench to equalise, bursting into the box unmarked and putting the ball past the Man U goaly with 18 minutes remaining. It was poor defending on United’s part, but the result was what mattered to Fulham fans.

The drama wasn’t over, as Harry Maguire came agonisingly close to a late winner, his header from Fernandes’ corner missing the bottom corner by inches.

Manager Marco Silva will be pleased with his side’s resilience, having drawn 1-1 with Brighton in their season opener. For Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, it was another case of “what if” following their opening day defeat to Arsenal.

AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Barnsley

AFC Wimbledon delivered their best performance of the season so far with a convincing 2-0 win over promotion-chasing Barnsley at The Cherry Red Records Stadium yesterday.

The Dons took the lead in the 29th minute through striker Matty Stevens, who coolly converted after Myles Hippolyte flicked on a deflected cross from the right wing. Stevens has now scored three league goals this campaign, establishing himself as a key threat in attack.

Despite Barnsley creating several excellent chances throughout the match, AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper Nathan Bishop was in inspired form, producing a string of crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay. His best stop came in the 27th minute when he made a spectacular diving save to deny David McGoldrick from close range.

The second half saw Barnsley pile on the pressure as they searched for an equalizer, with Patrick Kelly and Adam Phillips both going close. However, substitute Antwoine Hackford sealed the victory in the 70th minute with a clinical finish, firing into the bottom corner after being played through on goal.

Manager Johnnie Jackson was delighted with his team’s display but remains ambitious for more. “It has been a good start, there is no getting away from that,” he said. “The boys just keep showing up and it is showing that we are really good team.”

The result moves AFC Wimbledon up to 10th in League One and continues their excellent start to life back in the third tier. With three wins from their opening five games, the Dons are proving they belong at this level and giving their Putney supporters plenty to cheer about.

For Barnsley, it was their first defeat of the season, ending an unbeaten run that had seen them collect 10 points from their opening four matches. Manager Conor Hourihane couldn’t hide his frustration at his team’s failure to convert their chances, admitting: “I’m not sure how we didn’t score today.”

The victory showcases AFC Wimbledon’s growing confidence and suggests they could be in for an exciting campaign as they look to establish themselves in League One.
