Mixed fortunes: Fulham triumph, Wimbledon falter in final pre-season tests

Cottagers dominate in Algarve as League One newcomers fall to late Southend strike.

Fulham’s pre-season campaign continued on a high note this weekend as Harry Wilson scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Algarve. The friendly was part of the club’s eight-day training camp in southern Portugal.

Wilson’s brace, combined with a strong team performance, saw the Cottagers take control early against their Premier League rivals. The Welsh international’s sharp form will be welcome news for Marco Silva, whose side face Saudi Pro League team Al Ittihad next on Wednesday in a behind-closed-doors fixture.

Fulham will then round off their preparations with a home match against Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt on August 9th, before opening their Premier League season away to Brighton on August 16th.

Wimbledon go south

Meanwhile, AFC Wimbledon wrapped up their pre-season with a 1-0 defeat away at Southend United. Despite enjoying much of the possession, the Dons couldn’t find a breakthrough against the National League side. Johnnie Jackson’s team now turn their attention to League One, with their first fixture coming on August 1st against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

In other pre-season action across the region:

  • Hampton & Richmond Borough were narrowly beaten 2-1 at Real Bedford.
  • Kingstonian drew 2-2 with Eastbourne Borough.
