Heartbreak and glory: Norrie wins all-Brit clash in Paris

Putney star powers through to face Djokovic in French Open fourth round.

In a rare and somewhat bittersweet all-British encounter at Roland-Garros, Putney local Cameron Norrie triumphed over compatriot Jacob Fearnley in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-2, to secure his place in the fourth round of the French Open.

While it’s great to see British talent progressing in major tournaments, the match-up also guaranteed the exit of one of our team.

Norrie, who has strong ties to Putney, has long been a fixture in the local tennis scene. Before relocating to Monaco, he resided in East Putney, often cycling to the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton for training sessions.  His still has his Putney flat, adorned with contemporary art pieces including works by Damien Hirst, and was spotted by the Thames waterfront just a few weeks ago.

The match itself was momentarily overshadowed by unexpected fireworks from nearby Paris St-Germain fans celebrating their team’s Champions League final appearance, causing a brief disruption on Court Simonne Mathieu.

Still two Brits in it

Looking ahead, Norrie faces a formidable challenge in the fourth round against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. The two have met five times previously, with Djokovic leading their head-to-head 5-0, including a recent semifinal victory over Norrie at the Geneva Open.

In other British successes at the French Open, Sutton’s Jack Draper advanced to the last 16 for the first time, defeating Brazil’s João Fonseca in straight sets. Draper will next face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.

It is the first time since 1963 that two British men have reached the fourth round at the clay-court Grand Slam.

Norrie’s journey from his early days playing tennis with a modified squash racket in New Zealand to becoming a mainstay in British tennis is a testament to his dedication and resilience. As he prepares to face Djokovic, fans will be eager to see if he can leverage his experience and form to make a deep run at Roland-Garros.
