Think all your favourite food spots in Putney are squeaky clean? Think again.

We’ve compiled and mapped every food establishment in the Putney constituency with a hygiene rating of 3 or below, based on official inspection records. The list includes 30 businesses — from school kitchens to takeaways — and surprisingly contains some familiar names.

What the ratings mean

Food hygiene ratings are awarded by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) after inspections by Wandsworth Council. They assess cleanliness, food safety, storage, and how well risks are managed. Here’s the scale:

  • 5 – Very Good: Immaculate hygiene standards.
  • 4 – Good: Minor improvements needed.
  • 3 – Generally Satisfactory: Legal minimum met, but improvements required.
  • 2 – Improvement Necessary: Several areas not up to scratch.
  • 1 – Major Improvement Necessary: Serious problems. Not what you want from your dinner.
  • 0 – Urgent Improvement Necessary: Immediate action required (thankfully, none of these in Putney).

While a 3 rating means the basics are in place, it’s far from ideal. It indicates just satisfactory standards. A rating of 2 or 1 signals that inspectors found significant concerns. This doesn’t mean a place is unsafe to eat at, but it does mean the risk of something going wrong is higher.

Local hotspots of concern

What’s worrying is not just the number of low-rated venues, but their locations. There’s a concentration of poorly rated establishments around Putney High Street and Roehampton, including several popular takeaway spots and even some school canteens.

And while many businesses eventually improve after a reinspection, two Putney businesses currently hold a rating of just 1, meaning major improvements are needed. These should ring alarm bells.

Establishments in Putney rated 3 or below

Sorted by rating, then business name:

Rating: 1 – Major Improvement Necessary
  • MKS Grocers & Halal Meat, 209 Wandsworth High Street, SW18 4JE – Inspected: March 2024
  • Sharif Halal Meat, 189 Merton Road, SW18 5EF – Inspected: June 2024

We were a little concerned that the two lowest-rated food places in Putney were both Halal places, so we did some additional research. Of the 12 places advertising themselves as “Halal” in Wandsworth, four are rated 5 (immaculate); 1 is rated 4; 5 are rated 3; and 2 are rated 1.
