In an impressive display of community support, local residents have raised nearly £10,500 for a crucial environmental project that will help safeguard the future of Wimbledon and Putney Commons.
The “Big Green Match Funding Campaign,” which concluded recently, significantly exceeded its initial £8,000 target thanks to generous donations from the Commons’ supporters. The fundraising effort was boosted by match funding from the Big Give Trust, which doubled every pound donated.
“We are once again blown away by the support received,” said a representative from the Wimbledon and Putney Commons management. “With your support, we can now begin researching how water moves, flows, floods, drains and pools within the landscape.”
The funds will finance a specialist hydrology study aimed at understanding and improving water management across the Commons. This research is critical for protecting the area’s diverse wetlands, which include nine ponds and rare peatland bogs currently at risk of drying up.

Better for visitors
Beyond conservation of these unique habitats, the study will address practical concerns for visitors and recreational users. The research will inform strategies to improve pathways, prevent waterlogging on playing fields, and enhance overall biodiversity while maintaining visitor access.
“Whether we are experiencing dry summers or never-ending rain, this information will be incredibly helpful as we work to ensure that water is directed to the habitats that need it most,” the Commons team explained.
Climate resilience appears to be a key motivation behind the project, with organizers noting the study will help “future-proof the Commons” against increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
The successful fundraising campaign demonstrates the strong community connection to these beloved green spaces, which serve as vital recreational and ecological resources for southwest London residents.
Local conservation experts have praised the initiative, pointing out that understanding water systems is fundamental to effective land management, particularly for areas with complex ecosystems like those found within the Commons.
For those who missed the fundraising campaign but still wish to support conservation efforts at Wimbledon and Putney Commons, information about other donation opportunities and volunteer programs can be found on the Commons’ official website.
