Sessegnon sparks wild Fulham comeback with stunning stoppage-time winner

Smith Rowe’s redemption and Sessegnon’s heroics fire cottagers to vital victory
Ryan Sessegnon: Here's one of our own

Well, who said Fulham don’t know how to do drama?

It was a day for the travelling fans to remember, as Fulham roared back from a frustrating first half to claim a thrilling 2-1 win against Southampton at St Mary’s. With Emile Smith Rowe and Ryan Sessegnon providing the late heroics, Marco Silva’s men kept their European hopes alive with a performance that mixed patience, perseverance, and just a touch of magic.

Fulham made two changes to the side that lost the SW6 derby, and early signs were promising — some slick interplay between Willian and Ryan Sessegnon led to the first sight of goal. But it was Southampton who struck first blood, as Jack Stephens flicked in a peach of a free-kick delivery after just 13 minutes.

Frustration began to creep in. Despite controlling possession, Fulham couldn’t find that clinical edge before the break. Missed chances, near-misses, and a stubborn Saints defense kept it 1-0 at half-time. But Fulham fans weren’t worried — because this Fulham side doesn’t know when to quit.

Emile Smith Rowe: Redemption Arc in Full Flow

There was a time this season when Emile Smith Rowe looked lost — benched, injured, and with some fans questioning if he would ever truly settle at the Cottage. Today, he answered all those doubts loud and clear.

Coming off the bench at half-time, Smith Rowe was electric. Hungry for the ball, fearless in attack, he demanded to be the man to change the game. And change it he did.

The equaliser had a slice of fortune — a deflection looping it over Ramsdale — but the build-up was all Emile. His first touch to kill Alex Iwobi’s scooped ball was pure silk, the composure, pure class.

In his post-match interview, Smith Rowe was buzzing: “I just wanted to stay calm and equalize so we could push for the win,” he said. Mission accomplished. After missing the derby, he looked like a man on a mission today — sharper, braver, more himself. Fulham fans: he’s back.

Ryan Sessegnon: He’s One of Our Own

And then came the moment. The kind of moment you dream about if you’ve grown up in black and white.

Ryan Sessegnon, a true Fulham Academy graduate, capped his all-action display with a stunning stoppage-time winner. Playing left-back for much of the match, Sess bombed forward with relentless energy — and when Adama Traoré whipped in another wicked cross, there he was, in the right place, at the right time, to stoop low and bury his header into the far corner.

Cue absolute bedlam in the away end.

It was Sessegnon’s sixth goal contribution in his last eight games — astonishing form for a player bouncing between left-back and winger — and Marco Silva couldn’t hide his pride post-match: “We know Sess can score goals. It’s not a surprise to anyone at this club. He’s got that coolness in front of goal that few defenders have.”

Smith Rowe summed it up perfectly: “He’s been doing this since he was young, man. I’m just so happy for him.” So were we all.

Final Whistle: Scenes in the Away End!

As the final whistle blew, the Fulham players ran to the travelling fans, who had been loud and proud all afternoon. The celebrations lasted long after the players had gone down the tunnel — chants of “Sessegnon, he’s one of our own!” echoing around St Mary’s.

This wasn’t just a comeback. It was a reminder of everything this Fulham side is about: grit, flair, and family.

European football still beckons if the boys can keep their foot on the gas. After today, you wouldn’t bet against them.
