Bertrand Guillemot named as rower who tragically died during Vesta Masters Race

French rowing legend earned a bronze medal for France at the World Rowing Junior Championships.

The man who tragically lost his life during the Vesta International Masters Head of the River Race on the River Thames last weekend has been named as Bertrand Guillemot, a respected and beloved figure in the French rowing community.

The French Rowing Federation (FFA) confirmed the identity of the deceased earlier this week, paying tribute to Guillemot’s extraordinary dedication to the sport. A lifelong rower, Bertrand began his journey in 1973 with the Rowing Club of Vannes. He quickly rose to prominence, becoming French junior champion in 1975 and earning a bronze medal for France at the World Rowing Junior Championships in the coxed four.

Guillemot remained an influential presence in rowing long after his competitive career, serving as a technical advisor and later president of the Brittany Rowing League. His contributions helped grow and sustain the sport in the Brittany region and beyond, and he was widely admired for his leadership, passion, and humility.

Tragedy

Tragically, Guillemot became unwell during the race near Barnes Bridge while rowing with his Annecy-based Masters E crew. His teammates immediately stopped to assist and initiated first aid before emergency services transported him to hospital. Despite their efforts, Bertrand sadly passed away.

The Vesta Open Events Committee and British Rowing have both expressed their deep sorrow, offering support to the crew and others affected. The race, established in 1982, is a key event in the international rowing calendar, and the tragedy has cast a shadow over this year’s edition. Vesta Rowing Club has lowered its flags in mourning.

This revelation brings a name and a legacy to the heartbreaking incident that shook the rowing world over the weekend. Bertrand Guillemot will be remembered not only for his achievements on the water, but also for the generosity and dedication he brought to rowing throughout his life.

The French Rowing Federation and the global rowing community extend their heartfelt condolences to Bertrand’s family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.
