Train passengers can expected significant disruption this weekend due to engineering works on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March.

If you are planning to go into the city, or out to Kingston, Richmond, Reading and so on – you may want to make alternative arrangements.

Network Rail engineers will be carrying out vital maintenance on a key track junction between Queenstown Road (Battersea) and Clapham Junction, affecting train services that run between London Waterloo and South West London, including Putney, Barnes, Kingston and Richmond as well as some services via Surbiton.

Service changes and alternative travel options
  • On Saturday 15 March, rail replacement buses will operate between Clapham Junction and Barnes, with further service alterations across affected routes.
  • On Sunday 16 March, buses will replace trains between Clapham Junction and Twickenham via Richmond, and between Kew Bridge and Clapham Junction.
  • Afternoon and evening services between London Waterloo and Kingston via Hounslow will not run.
  • Queenstown Road (Battersea) station will be closed all weekend, and passengers should use alternative stations.
Passenger advice

Customers are strongly advised to plan ahead and check their journeys before traveling, as rail replacement services and diversions will extend journey times.

Peter Williams, SWR’s customer and commercial director, said: “On the weekend of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March there will be many changes to train services. Rail replacement bus services will run, and some journeys may take longer than usual, so it’s important that customers plan ahead. For more information, we recommend checking our website. We are very sorry for the disruption that this will cause, however, customers can expect a more reliable railway when this engineering work is complete.”

Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director, added:

“We know that closing the lines in and out of London Waterloo station will be disruptive to passengers, and we’re sorry to anyone who will be impacted by this work.

The junction between Queenstown Road (Battersea) and Clapham Junction is extremely busy and needs renewing to keep trains running safely and reliably.

We urge passengers to plan ahead and check before they travel and thank them for their patience while we carry out this vital work.”

Further disruption ahead

These changes come ahead of additional planned engineering works on 22 and 23 March, which will affect services between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside.

Passengers should check SWR’s website or use a journey planner for the latest updates on service alterations.
