The four candidates standing in a West Putney by-election for a seat on Wandsworth Council have been announced.
They are:
- Nick Austin (Conservatives)
- Jane Briginshaw (Labour)
- Mark Lejman (Liberal Democrats)
- Joseph McEntee (Green)
The by-election will be held on 2 May to coincide with the London Assembly elections after Labour councillor Claire Gilbert resigned her seat.
Gilbert won the seat in 2022, having previously been a councillor for Roehampton, as part of a successful effort by Labour to take control of Wandsworth Council after 44 years of Conservative control.
Labour will hope to keep the seat, one of nine it won from the Conservatives in May 2022 giving it a majority on the council, although the Conservative Party is expected to try to win it back, with West Putney previously a stronghold for the party.
Also in contention are the Liberal Democrats who have seen their polling numbers jump in the London mayoral election process.
The deadline to register to vote by post is Wednesday 17 April 2024, and the deadline to vote by proxy is Wednesday 24 April 2024. For more details, including on new voter ID rules to vote, see the Wandsworth Council West Putney by-election webpage [webpage subsequently deleted].
