Ireland humiliate England on Itoje’s centenary as Six Nations dreams die at Twickenham
England 21–42 Ireland (Allianz Stadium, Twickenham) — Saturday, 21 February

Maro Itoje’s 100th cap will be remembered not for the milestone but for the manner of England’s most humiliating Twickenham defeat to Ireland in the Six Nations era. Andy Farrell’s side put 42 points past the hosts — their biggest ever points total at the ground — and won by 21, a record margin too. England fell apart in the second half as two sin-bins, for Freddie Steward and Henry Pollock, left them severely exposed. Ireland’s power play was ruthless: Jamie Gibson-Park, Robert Baloucoune, Tommy O’Brien, Dan Sheehan and Jamie Osborne all crossed, with Jack Crowley adding 17 points from the boot. England’s three tries through Fraser Dingwall, Ollie Lawrence and Sam Underhill were scant consolation.
England’s title hopes are mathematically over after back-to-back defeats — Scotland and now Ireland — but the bigger story is the discipline crisis plaguing Steve Borthwick’s side all season. Fourteen penalties conceded at Twickenham is a wretched total at any level of rugby. Ireland, who had slipped to fifth in the world rankings before this fixture, revived their own Championship ambitions in emphatic style.
France maintain Grand Slam march with bonus-point win over Italy
France 33–8 Italy (Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Lille) — Sunday, 22 February
France strengthened their grip on the Six Nations title with a bonus-point victory that was far more comfortable on the scoreboard than the pitch suggested. Louis Bielle-Biarrey, Emmanuel Meafou and Thomas Ramos — drafted in at fly-half after Matthieu Jalibert’s late withdrawal — all scored in an opening 30 minutes that had France 19-0 ahead. But Italy, inspired by Ange Capuozzo’s intercept try and Paolo Garbisi’s penalty, fought back to trail 19-8 at the break. The second half became an attritional arm-wrestle until Italy were reduced to 13 men in the final ten minutes, at which point debutant wing Gaël Dréan and Emilien Gailleton added further tries to seal a flattering margin. France take five tries from five total in Round 3, remain the only unbeaten side, and next face Scotland at Murrayfield on 7 March.

Quins beaten at Leicester in Premiership Rugby Cup thriller
Leicester Tigers 33–27 Harlequins (Mattioli Woods Welford Road) — Saturday, 21 February
Harlequins gave a spirited account at Welford Road but ultimately fell six points short in a compelling Premiership Rugby Cup clash. Leicester’s lineout dominance proved the difference again. Quins trail Pool B leaders and their hopes of progression are now under pressure ahead of their next fixture against Newcastle Red Bulls on 28 February.
Sale edge Harlequins Women in close PWR encounter
Sale Sharks Women 15–12 Harlequins Women (Morson Stadium, Manchester) — Saturday, 21 February
A tightly contested Premiership Women’s Rugby match went the way of the hosts, with Sale edging out Harlequins 15-12. Despite Harlequins enjoying 58% possession and 63% territory, they could not convert their dominance into points, with both sides crossing for two tries apiece. The defeat is significant in the PWR playoff race — Sale’s run-in now looks favourable, while Harlequins cannot afford further slip-ups.

Jiménez double sinks Sunderland as Fulham end three-game losing run
Sunderland 1–3 Fulham (Stadium of Light) — Sunday, 22 February

Raúl Jiménez dragged Fulham out of a three-game losing run with a commanding brace at the Stadium of Light, reigniting their hopes of a European finish. The Mexican striker headed home from Alex Iwobi’s corner on 54 minutes to break a goalless deadlock, then tucked away a penalty on 61 after Calvin Bassey was fouled. Enzo Le Fee pulled one back from the spot on 76 minutes to briefly threaten a comeback, but Iwobi sealed the points with a clever finish into the far corner on 85 to make it 3-1. Jiménez, now on eight Premier League goals for the season, was the decisive difference in a match that had seemed evenly poised at half-time. Fulham become only the second side to beat the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light this season, and this away win — only their fourth on the road all season — moves them up to 10th on 37 points.
Chelsea spill two points as Burnley punish last-gasp discipline failure
Chelsea 1–1 Burnley (Stamford Bridge) — Saturday, 21 February

Chelsea’s wretched season at Stamford Bridge reached another painful nadir as Burnley snatched a stoppage-time equaliser after João Pedro’s 4th-minute lead was cancelled out by their own ill-discipline. Wesley Fofana — Chelsea’s eighth red card of the campaign — was dismissed on 72 minutes, and Burnley’s James Ward-Prowse punished them immediately from the resulting set piece, with Zian Flemming converting in the 93rd minute. Chelsea are fourth on 45 points but have now dropped 17 points from winning positions at home this season — a statistic that defines their inconsistency. The result was a lifeline for Liam Rosenior’s Burnley, who remain in a relegation battle on 19 points.

Wimbledon put Bradford to the sword with commanding Cherry Red victory
AFC Wimbledon 3–1 Bradford City (Cherry Red Records Stadium) — Saturday, 21 February

AFC Wimbledon delivered a statement performance at Cherry Red Records with a controlled 3-1 win over Bradford City before 8,486 supporters. James Tilley opened the scoring on 11 minutes, Marcus Browne doubled the lead just before half-time, and Matty Stevens killed the game on 67 minutes. Stephen Humphrys’ consolation for Bradford was too little, too late. Johnnie Jackson’s side have now recorded back-to-back home victories and their form makes for encouraging reading with a good chunk of the season remaining.

STORY OF THE WEEK
Ireland’s 42-21 demolition of England at Twickenham on Maro Itoje’s 100th cap was one of the most significant Six Nations results in years — the largest winning margin and points total Ireland have ever achieved at HQ. At its heart was England’s continuing discipline crisis: fourteen penalties conceded and two sin-bins in a match of this magnitude represent a systemic problem that Steve Borthwick must address urgently before Round 4 in March.
Corrections: The penalty that led to Jiménez’s second goal was won by Calvin Bassey, not Harry Wilson. Jiménez’s tally after the match was eight Premier League goals, not seven.
