Half Moon closed for major refurbishment until spring

The Half Moon has closed for a major refurbishment that will keep Putney’s most celebrated music venue shut until the end of March.

The pub on Lower Richmond Road, which has hosted live music every single night since 1963, shut on 5 January for what owners Young’s are calling a “full makeover”.

Planning documents reveal the full scope of the work. A large first floor office is being converted into a glass-fronted “orangery” bar, enclosed by Crittall-style glazing with folding doors opening onto a roof terrace. The terrace will feature a retractable louvred roof, allowing it to open to the sky in good weather, with a planting buffer along the front adding greenery to the streetscape.

A painted steel spiral staircase in deep heritage green will provide access to the new space. At the rear, 3.5 metre acoustic timber fencing is being installed to minimise noise for neighbours, while the beer garden gets new metal railings and gates. Inside, the ground floor is getting new seating booths. The whole building is being repainted in a palette of muted greens and heritage creams.

“While we’re modernising the space and adding extra room, we’ll remain true to our historic roots and continue to build on our reputation as a legendary grassroots venue,” the pub said.

The plans were approved by Wandsworth Council in August 2023 after residents in neighbouring John Keall House and the Felsham Road estate raised concerns about noise and privacy. Conditions require the spiral staircase to be used only for emergencies after 11pm, with all windows and doors closed by that time. No amplified music will be allowed on the terrace. The second floor is being fitted out as staff accommodation.

That history the venue is promising to protect runs deep. The Half Moon is the stage where Kate Bush gave her first ever public performance. Where U2 played their first sold-out UK show. Where the Rolling Stones, who cut their teeth here in the early sixties, came back for a private bash as recently as 2000. Elvis Costello had a residency when he was paid in sandwiches. Ed Sheeran played support before anyone knew his name.

Anyone with tickets for a gig during the closure should check their emails. The events team has managed to reschedule 90 per cent of affected shows, with ticket holders receiving details of new dates. A handful of gigs have had to be cancelled outright, with full refunds being issued.

The Half Moon is expected to reopen in late March or early April. Updates will be posted on the venue’s website and social media.
