SUMMARY:An Evening with Craig Brown
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of conversation with Britain’s eminent writer and satirist Craig Brown to celebrate the paperback launch of his brilliant biography of the late Elizabeth II\, A Voyage Around the Queen. \nBringing the same structural brilliance to a biography of Queen Elizabeth II as he did to her sister in Ma’am Darling and The Beatles in One Two Three Four\, Craig Brown once again succeeds in finding revelatory angles and information about one of the most documented individuals of the last century. \n“Queen Elizabeth II was famous for longer than anyone who has ever lived. When people spoke of her\, they spoke of themselves; when they dreamed of her\, they dreamed of themselves. She mirrored their hopes and anxieties. Though by nature reserved and unassuming\, her presence could fill presidents and rock gods with terror.” \nWhat critics are saying: \n\n“Brown understands the simple paradox: that the only way to write insightfully about the Queen is to write entirely around the Queen … Brilliantly funny [and] perceptive” – Financial Times\n“Most of all in this magnificent book we have a sense of the monarch being looked at freshly\, without any prejudice or point to prove\, and with a real understanding of human complexity” – Philip Hensher\, Spectator\n\nThis intimate 1-hour event offers a unique opportunity to hear from one of Britain’s most insightful writers about his latest work. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Lea Ypi- Putney
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of thought- provoking conversation with Lea Ypi\, author of Free\, as we discuss her latest book Indignity.\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of thought- provoking conversation with Lea Ypi\, author of Free\, as we discuss her latest book Indignity. Ypi’s second book is a dive into Europe’s forgotten past from the Ottoman Empire to the dawn of Communism in the Balkans. \nAbout the book \nWhen Lea Ypi discovers a photo of her grandmother\, Leman\, honeymooning in the Alps in 1941 posted by a stranger on social media\, she is faced with unsettling questions. Growing up\, she was told records of her grandmother’s youth were destroyed in the early days of communism in Albania. But there Leman was with her husband\, Asllan Ypi: glamorous newlyweds while World War II raged. \nWhat follows is a thrilling reimagining of the past\, as we are transported to the vanished world of Ottoman aristocracy\, the making of modern Greece and Albania\, a global financial crisis\, the horrors of war and the dawn of communism in the Balkans. While investigating the truth about her family\, Ypi grapples with uncertainty. Who is the real Leman Ypi? What made her move to Tirana as a young woman and marry a socialist who sympathized with the Popular Front while his father led a collaborationist government? And why was she smiling in the winter of 1941? \nBy turns epic and intimate\, profound and gripping\, Indignity explores what it means to survive in an age of extremes. It reveals the fragility of truth\, both personal and political\, and the cost of decisions made against the tide of history. Through secret police reports of communist spies\, court depositions\, and Ypi’s memories of her grandmother\, we move between present and past\, archive and imagination\, fact and fiction. Ultimately\, she asks\, what do we really know about the people closest to us? And with what moral authority do we judge the acts of previous generations? \nAbout the Author \nLea Ypi holds the Ralph Miliband Chair in Politics and Philosophy at the London School of Economics. Her first trade book\, Free: Coming of Age at the End of History won the Ondaatje Prize and the Slightly Foxed Best First Biography Prize and was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Costa Biography Award. It is translated into over thirty languages.

SUMMARY:M. John Harrison in Conversation With Julia Armfield - Putney
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of conversation with writer M. John Harrison to celebrate the reissue of his brilliant novel The Course of The Heart\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of conversation with Britain’s greatest living writer M. John Harrison to celebrate the reissue of his beguiling\, unsettling\, and brilliant novel The Course of The Heart. \nHarrison will be interviewed by the novelist Julia Armfield. \nOn a hot May night\, three Cambridge students carry out a ritualistic act that changes their lives. Decades later\, none of the participants can remember what transpired; but their clouded memories bind them together. Unable to move on\, Pam Stuyvesant has epilepsy and is plagued by sensual visions. Her husband Lucas believes that a dwarfish creature is stalking him\, and invents histories to soothe Pam’s fears. Self-styled Sorcerer Yaxley becomes obsessed with a terrifyingly transcendent reality. The narrator is seemingly the least effected participant in the ritual: he is haunted by the smell of roses\, and his guilt as he attempts to help his friends escape the torment that has engulfed their lives. \nStrange\, dreamlike and moving\, The Course of the Heart is an examination of the edges of humanity where we lie\, hide\, hurt and heal. \nA gloriously intelligent\, beautifully written and thoroughly maddening book – Independent \nA spare textual elegance and closure-denying restraint impresses and fulfills – Iain Banks\, Guardian \nIncisive pen portraits and quiet\, elegant prose – Lisa Tuttle\, Guardian \nOne of the best writers currently at work in English – Robert Macfarlane\, author of The Wild Places \nIs M John Harrison the best writer at work today? He’s certainly among the deftest and most original – Olivia Laing\, Guardian \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission\n\n\n\n\n\n£8.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaterstones Cardholder\n\n\n\n\n\n£6.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook & Ticket: The Course of the Heart (PB)\n\n\n\n\n\n£14.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Sleepless: An Evening with Annabel Abbs - Putney
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful evening of conversation with author Annabel Abbs to discuss Sleepless: Discovering the Power of the Night Self.\n\n\nJoin us for an insightful evening of conversation with author Annabel Abbs to discuss her latest book\, Sleepless: Discovering the Power of the Night Self. \nAfter experiencing a series of bereavements\, sleep eludes Annabel Abbs. And yet her sleeplessness leads to a profound and unexpected discovery: her Night Self. The night transformed into a place of creativity and liberation. After some research\, Annabel found she wasn’t alone. From the radical fifteenth-century philosopher Laura Cereta and subversive artist Louise Bourgeois\, to Virginia Woolf and the activist Peace Pilgrim\, women have long found sanctuary\, inspiration and courage in darkness.Drawing on the latest science\, which shows we are more imaginative\, open-minded and reflective at night\, this is a moving\, revelatory voyage into the dark. \n‘This book will inspire you to get up\, light a candle\, and explore your own Night Self.’ – Financial Times \n‘Abbs’ descriptions of the pleasures of sleeping\, waking and walking under the night sky are a tempting reminder of adventure and connection with the wild… but where Abbs really succeeds is in subverting narratives about sleep…and in revealing a wondrous night world.’ – New Scientist

DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Tawseef Khan in conversation with Rebecca Watson\, to discuss his debut novel Determination.\n\n\nJoin us in welcoming Tawseef Khan in conversation with Rebecca Watson\, to discuss his debut novel Determination\, a heart-breaking\, honest\, and deeply important story doubling as a trenchant political critique of UK immigration. \nJamila Shah is twenty-nine and exhausted. An immigration solicitor tasked with running the precious family law firm\, Jamila is prone to being woken in the middle of the night by frantic phone calls from clients on the cusp of deportation. Working under the shadow of the government’s ‘hostile environment’\, she constantly prays and hopes that their ‘determinations’ will result in her clients being allowed to stay. \nIn this polyphonic\, assured and character-driven debut\, we meet the staff of Shah & Co Solicitors\, who themselves arrived in the UK not too long ago\, and their clients\, more recent arrivals who are made to jump through hoops to create a life for themselves whilst trying to achieve some semblance of normality.‘A compassionate\, beautifully told portrait populated by lives that circle the UK’s lamentable immigration story. This is a story of determination\, also grief\, hope\, loss and desperation\, as well as a reminder of the care\, patience and kindness at the human end of a broken system‘ – GUY GUNARATNE\, author of In Our Mad and Furious City \n‘A novel as believable as any memoir\, offering a kaleidoscope of lives and characters\, all of whom seem to extend beyond these pages. A truly astonishing and self-assured piece of work’ – ADAM FARRER \nRebecca Watson is the author of little scratch\, which was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and the Desmond Elliott Prize and was adapted into an acclaimed play. Watson was chosen as one of the Observer’s 10 best debut novelists of 2021 and as a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice. Her sophomore novel I Will Crash\, published in July\, is a moving\, powerfully honest novel about how we love\, how we grieve and how we forgive.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Rachel Blackmore - Putney
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be joined by Rachel Blackmore for a very special evening to discuss her debut Novel\, Costanza.\n\n\nWe are delighted to be joined by Rachel Blackmore for a very special evening to discuss her debut Novel\, Costanza. \nRome\, 1636. History calls her a Muse. Temptress. Fallen woman. This is her story. In the scorched city of Rome\, the cobbled streets hum with gossip and sin. Costanza Piccolomini is a respectable young wife – until she meets Gianlorenzo Bernini\, the famed sculptor and star of Roman society\, whose jet-black gaze matches his dark temper. From the second they set eyes upon each other\, a fatal attraction is born. \nBased on a true story\, Costanza is a dizzying and sensual historical novel that brings to life a feminist icon who has been written out of history. This utterly addictive tale of desire and betrayal is perfect for fans of The Marriage Portrait and The Miniaturist. \n‘From the first page I was hooked. Love\, lust\, fury and betrayal leap from the page. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to read a true feminist retelling’ LOUISE HARE‘I loved it… Rich and evocative in its portrayal of 17th Century Rome. A fabulous\, evocative novel’ ELIZABETH CHADWICK

SUMMARY:An Evening with Karen Powell - Putney
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be joined by Karen Powell to discuss her latest novel Fifteen Wild Decembers.\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to be joined by Karen Powell to discuss her latest novel Fifteen Wild Decembers\, a creative reimagining of the life of Emily Bronte\, which was shortlisted for the Nero book awards 2023. The evening will be chaired by Georgina Moore\, author of The Garnett Girls. \nIsolated from society\, the Brontë children spend all their time inventing elaborate fictional realms or roaming the wild moors above their family home in Yorkshire. When the time comes for them to venture out into the world to earn a living\, each of them struggles to adapt\, but for Emily the change is catastrophic. Torn from the landscape she loves and no longer able to immerse herself in the fantastical world of Gondal that she and her younger sister Anne have created\, she is simply unable to function. \nAs a child\, Emily witnessed a rare natural phenomenon. After weeks of rain\, the peaty soil on Crow Hill became so sodden that the earth exploded. Since then\, her life has been dogged by tragedy and repeated failures. Her sisters are desperate to escape their unsatisfactory work as governesses and now the life of her brother Branwell\, the hope of the family\, is in turmoil. To the outside world\, Emily appears taciturn\, unexceptional; but beneath the surface her mind is in a creative ferment\, ready to burst forth. As the pressure on her grows\, another violent phenomenon is about to take place\, one that will fuse her imaginary world of Gondal with the landscape Emily loves so passionately\, and which will change the literary world forever. \n“Wild and captivating\, this takes us right to the heart of the Brontës’ story of creativity\, sisterhood and survival.”—Samantha Ellis\, author of How To Be a Heroine \n“I was spellbound by this fictionalised portrait\, brimming with the texture of the dank\, wild hills of Yorkshire\, the weight and power of grief\, and the contentment to be found in daring to forge one’s own path in the world. Delightful and intriguing; each sentence is so sharp\, so shining.”—Elizabeth Macneal\, author of Circus of Wonders \nKaren Powell was born in Rochester\, Kent. She left school at 16 but returned to education as a mature student to study English Literature at Lucy Cavendish College\, Cambridge. She lives in North Yorkshire. An early draft of The River Within was awarded a Northern Writers’ TLC ‘New Fiction Reads’ prize\, which seeks to support work-in-progress by new\, emerging and established writers across the North of England. \nGeorgina Moore grew up in London and lives on a houseboat on the River Thames with her partner\, two children and Bomber\, the Border Terrier. The Garnett Girls is her first novel and is set on the Isle of Wight\, where Georgina and her family have a holiday houseboat called Sturdy. Georgina is working on her second novel\, Walnut Tree Island\, which will be published in 2025

SUMMARY:An Evening With Kaliane Bradley at Waterstones Putney
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to be joined by Kaliane Bradley to celebrate the publication of The Ministry of Time.\n\n\nWe are thrilled to be joined by Kaliane Bradley to celebrate the publication of The Ministry of Time. Bradley’s dizzyingly assured debut is the book everyone is talking about\, and we’re truly honoured to be able to host her here in Putney. \n \nIn the near future\, a disaffected civil servant is offered a lucrative job in a mysterious new government ministry gathering ‘expats’ from across history to test the limits of time-travel. \nHer role is to work as a ‘bridge’: living with\, assisting and monitoring the expat known as ‘1847’ – Commander Graham Gore. As far as history is concerned\, Commander Gore died on Sir John Franklin’s doomed expedition to the Arctic\, so he’s a little disoriented to find himself alive and surrounded by outlandish concepts such as ‘washing machine’\, ‘Spotify’ and ‘the collapse of the British Empire’. With an appetite for discovery and a seven-a-day cigarette habit\, he soon adjusts; and during a long\, sultry summer he and his bridge move from awkwardness to genuine friendship\, to something more. \nBut as the true shape of the project that brought them together begins to emerge\, Gore and the bridge are forced to confront their past choices and imagined futures. Can love triumph over the structures and histories that have shaped them? And how do you defy history when history is living in your house? \n \n“Holy smokes this novel is an absolute cut above! Kaliane Bradley leaps into a storytelling league of her own. This book is a deadly serious speculative fiction but it is also one of the funniest books I’ve read in years. It is exciting\, surprising\, intellectually provocative\, weird\, radical\, tender and moving. I missed it when I was away from it. I will hurry to re-read it. Make room on your bookshelves for a new classic.” – Max Porter \n“As electric\, charming\, whimsical and strange as its ripped-from-history cast. (Extremely.) I loved every second I spent wrapped up in Kaliane Bradley’s stunning prose\, the moments that made me laugh and those that made my heart ache. This is a book that surprises as much as it delights\, and I’m already impatiently waiting for whatever Bradley concocts next” – Emily Henry \n \nKaliane Bradley is a British-Cambodian writer and editor based in London. Her short fiction has appeared in Somesuch Stories\,The Willowherb Review\, Electric Literature\, Catapult\, and Extra Teeth\, among others. She was the winner of the 2022 Harper’s Bazaar Short Story Prize and the 2022 V.S. Pritchett Short Story Prize.
