SUMMARY:Music in Germany Between the Wars
DESCRIPTION:Putney Library presents ‘Music in Germany Between the Wars’ on Thursday 22 January at 6:30pm\, an expert-led exploration of music composed during the Weimar Republic period. This free cultural talk in SW15 examines the remarkable artistic output between 1918-1933\, from Expressionism to Cabaret\, revealing music’s crucial role during this turbulent era in German history. The presentation is led by Katy Homden\, Putney Library Manager and music historian who received her PhD from Bournemouth University with a thesis exploring the relationship between opera and radio during the Weimar Republic. Dr Homden also teaches music history at City Literature Institute\, bringing academic expertise to this accessible public lecture. The session covers composers like Kurt Weill\, Paul Hindemith\, and Arnold Schoenberg\, examining how political upheaval\, economic instability\, and artistic innovation created a unique musical landscape. From the intellectual rigour of the Second Viennese School to the provocative satire of Brecht and Weill’s collaborations\, Weimar Germany produced some of the 20th century’s most influential musical works. This talk at Putney Library offers music lovers\, history enthusiasts\, and culturally curious Wandsworth residents a scholarly yet engaging examination of this fascinating period. Free admission with advance booking required via Eventbrite. Perfect for adults interested in classical music\, cultural history\, and the intersection of art and politics.
