SUMMARY:Stripped Naked - The Nude in Art History
DESCRIPTION:Stella Lyons\nJoin The Arts Society SW London for an illuminating study day exploring ‘Stripped Naked – The Nude in Art History’ with renowned art historian and lecturer Stella Grace Lyons at the Putney Arts Theatre on Monday\, 24 November 2025. \nThis comprehensive exploration of the nude in art history examines how the human body has served as both the epitome of beauty and a subject of censorship and controversy throughout the ages. Through three engaging lectures\, participants will discover how images of the nude reflect the social attitudes of the time and gain insights into the complex questions about changing relationships with the human body. \nThe study day features three fascinating lectures: \n10:30 to 11:30 – Lecture 1: ‘Introducing the Nude’\nBegin your journey with an introduction to the fundamental concepts and historical context of the nude in art. This opening lecture establishes the foundation for understanding how artists have approached the human form across different periods and cultures. \n12:00 to 13:00 – Lecture 2: ‘The Shock of the Nude’\nFollowing a refreshment break\, explore the controversial aspects of nude representation in art. Discover how certain depictions challenged societal norms and sparked debates about morality\, censorship\, and artistic freedom. Please note this lecture will help you understand your own sensibilities around nudity in art. \n13:45 to 14:45 – Lecture 3: ‘The Censored Nude’\nThe final lecture examines instances of censorship and suppression in art history\, revealing how political\, religious\, and social forces have attempted to control the representation of the human body. Learn about famous cases of artistic censorship and their lasting impact on cultural discourse. \nStella Grace Lyons brings exceptional expertise to this subject. As an accredited Art History lecturer\, speaker\, and writer with The Arts Society\, she has spent over a year studying Renaissance art in Florence\, followed by three months exploring Venetian art in Venice. Her extensive experience includes attending classes at the prestigious Charles H. Cecil studios in Florence\, providing her with unique insights into both the creation and interpretation of classical art. \nThe event takes place at the historic Putney Arts Theatre on Ravenna Road\, with doors opening at 10:00 for a 10:30 start. The venue provides a comfortable and intimate setting for this educational experience\, with breaks scheduled between lectures for refreshments and discussion. \nTickets are priced at £38 (plus a 50p booking fee) and can be purchased through TicketSource. SUMMARY:Sculpture in Britain Today and Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:British sculpture enjoyed a renaissance in the 20th century\, led by Moore and Hepworth. They were followed by a new generation of British-based sculptors including Rachel Whiteread\, Antony Gormley\, Maggi Hambling\, Anish Kapoor\, Richard Long and David Nash\, who have produced sculptures that are glorious\, challenging and moving in equal measure. \nA range of their work is examined along with a review of the sculptures that have adorned the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square\, and those proposed for 2026-28. The lecture concludes with a glimpse of the rising stars. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to book this event:\n\n\n\n\nThis will be a hybrid lecture. Members of TAS SW London can attend free of charge but non-members will be asked for a £10 fee at the door. To watch the lecture live online\, please email theartssocietyswlondon@gmail.com for a link. There is a charge of £5 for non-members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE ARTS SOCIETY ACCREDITED LECTURER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMr Raymond Warburton\n\n\nRay has had a life-long love of art. However\, in his twenties\, Ray studied social sciences at the London School of Economics and the School of Oriental and African Studies. These studies led to a career in health and social care\, with art being an evening and weekend passion. But all that changed in 2011\, when Ray became a guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Then from 2014 to 2017\, he studied art history at the Open University\, and then at the University of Buckingham\, from where he gained an MA in the History of Art. And to cap it all\, Ray became an Arts Society lecturer in 2017. Ray also knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of lectures as he is a member of his local Arts Society in Blackheath. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGALLERY
