DESCRIPTION:Join Putney Library every Wednesday from 3-4pm for Singing for the Brain\, a specialized weekly program designed for people with dementia and their carers. This evidence-based activity uses music and singing to support cognitive function\, improve wellbeing\, and provide valuable social connection. \nSinging for the Brain sessions are carefully structured to maximize benefits for people living with dementia. Music engages multiple areas of the brain simultaneously\, helping to stimulate memory\, improve mood\, reduce anxiety\, and maintain communication skills. Even when other forms of expression become difficult\, many people with dementia retain the ability to sing and respond to music. \nLed by trained facilitators\, each session includes familiar songs from different eras\, gentle vocal exercises\, rhythm activities\, and social interaction time. The supportive group environment helps both those with dementia and their carers feel less isolated\, while the focus on preserved abilities rather than lost ones promotes dignity and confidence. \nCarers benefit too\, gaining respite through shared musical enjoyment\, connecting with others in similar situations\, learning techniques they can use at home\, and experiencing positive moments with their loved ones. The hour provides a break from care routines while remaining supportive and purposeful. \nNo musical experience or singing ability is required – participation can be as active or passive as feels comfortable. SUMMARY:From Dust to Ashes: The Development of Cremation in England & Wales\, 1874 to 2025 - a talk by Dr Brian Parsons.
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Putney Library are delighted to welcome back Dr Brian Parsons\, author and funeral historian\, to give this fully illustrated presentation. The talk will start by tracing the factors that led up to the first cremation at Woking in March 1885\, followed by an analysis of why cremation was so slow to develop in subsequent decades. The post-World War years witnessed a dramatic rise in the preference for cremation; today\, just over 80 per cent of funerals are at a crematorium. The final part of this talk explores this replacement of burial along with current themes such as direct cremation and the introduction of ‘Water Cremation’.\nDr Brian Parsons has worked in funeral directing in London since 1982. He now focuses on staff training\, but also researches the history of funeral service along with the development of cremation and London cemeteries. He is the author of a number of books including The London Way of Death\, Committed to the Cleansing Flame\, (with Hugh Meller) London Cemeteries: An Illustrated Guide and Gazetteer\, and (with Peter C Jupp) From Dust to Ashes. The Development of Cremation in England & Wales\, 1874-2025.\nRefreshments from 6.00pm and this FREE talk will begin at 6.30pm. Cash donations gratefully accepted.
