SUMMARY:Singing for the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Join Putney Library every Wednesday from 3-4pm for Singing for the Brain\, a specialized weekly program designed for people with dementia and their carers. This evidence-based activity uses music and singing to support cognitive function\, improve wellbeing\, and provide valuable social connection. \nSinging for the Brain sessions are carefully structured to maximize benefits for people living with dementia. Music engages multiple areas of the brain simultaneously\, helping to stimulate memory\, improve mood\, reduce anxiety\, and maintain communication skills. Even when other forms of expression become difficult\, many people with dementia retain the ability to sing and respond to music. \nLed by trained facilitators\, each session includes familiar songs from different eras\, gentle vocal exercises\, rhythm activities\, and social interaction time. The supportive group environment helps both those with dementia and their carers feel less isolated\, while the focus on preserved abilities rather than lost ones promotes dignity and confidence. \nCarers benefit too\, gaining respite through shared musical enjoyment\, connecting with others in similar situations\, learning techniques they can use at home\, and experiencing positive moments with their loved ones. The hour provides a break from care routines while remaining supportive and purposeful. \nNo musical experience or singing ability is required – participation can be as active or passive as feels comfortable. No registration needed\, simply drop in on Wednesday afternoons. \nFor more information about Singing for the Brain and other wellbeing programs at Putney Library\, contact 020 8780 3085 or email Putney.Library@GLL.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join Putney Library every Wednesday evening from 6-7pm for a peaceful meditation session focused on relaxation\, mindfulness\, and mental wellbeing. This free weekly practice offers a valuable hour of calm in the midst of busy London life\, suitable for complete beginners and experienced meditators alike. \nMeditation has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety\, improve focus and concentration\, enhance emotional regulation\, promote better sleep\, lower blood pressure\, and increase overall sense of wellbeing. Regular practice\, even just an hour a week\, can make meaningful differences to mental and physical health. \nLed by an experienced meditation facilitator\, sessions typically include guided meditation practices\, breathing exercises\, mindfulness techniques\, brief teachings on meditation principles\, and time for silent practice and reflection. Various meditation styles may be explored\, helping participants discover what works best for them. \nThe library provides a quiet\, comfortable space conducive to meditation practice. SUMMARY:Knit and Natter
DESCRIPTION:Join Putney Library’s Knit and Natter group every Thursday afternoon from 2-4pm. This popular weekly gathering brings together knitters\, crocheters\, and textile craft enthusiasts for two hours of creative activity and friendly conversation in a relaxed social setting. \nWhether you’re an experienced knitter working on intricate patterns\, a beginner just learning to cast on\, or somewhere in between\, you’ll find a warm welcome here. The group is self-directed\, meaning members bring their own projects and work at their own pace while enjoying the companionship of fellow crafters. \nKnit and Natter offers numerous benefits beyond the crafts themselves: reduce stress and anxiety through the meditative rhythm of needlework\, maintain mental agility and fine motor skills\, share patterns\, techniques\, and creative inspiration\, make friends and combat social isolation\, and contribute to community charity projects when the group organizes them. \nThe Thursday afternoon timing makes this an ideal mid-week activity\, providing a peaceful interlude in busy schedules. Many members appreciate the dedicated time to focus on their craft projects while engaging in the kind of easy\, flowing conversation that gives the group its name. \nNo registration required – simply drop in with your knitting\, crochet\, or other textile project. Bring your own supplies\, patterns\, and works-in-progress. Beginners are very welcome; experienced members are always happy to share tips and help troubleshoot. \nFor more information about Knit and Natter and other social activities at Putney Library\, contact 020 8780 3085 or email Putney.Library@GLL.org.
