SUMMARY:Putney Historical Walking Tour - 90 minutes
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating stroll through Putney’s history\, from Romans to Rowing and lots in between. Lots of dates available. \n  \n  \n\n\n\n\nRefund Policy\n\nNo Refunds\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA 90 minute walking tour of Putney\, with an enthusiastic young local guide who will help you re-imagine some of Putney’s memorable moments in history. \nLots of dates available\, select “more options” under Date and time to see the available walks for next few months. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently asked questions\n\n\n\n\n\nCan under 12s attend ?\n\n\n\n\nYes absolutely\, they are free and do not need a ticket. While they may be a little young for some of the history (it’s all PG and non-scary) our guide will aim to try and engage them. \n\n\n\n\n\nCan I bring my dog ?\n\n\n\n\nYes that’s fine\, dogs on leads are welcome. The walk is entirely outdoors\, there is only one area that they cannot enter\, but it won’t detract from the tour. \n\n\n\n\n\nWill the tour be cancelled in bad weather ?\n\n\n\n\nWe always aim to run the tour and as it is entirely outdoors\, you should dress appropriately. If it is safe to run the tour we will aim to do so. \n\n\n\n\n\nHow far will I have to walk ?\n\n\n\n\nThe tour lasts 90 minutes and the distance walked is about 1.5 miles\, approx 2km. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere do we start and finish ?\n\n\n\n\nThe start point is on the pavement outside Putney mainline station on Putney High Street. Your guide will have a “Putney History Tours” T-shirt and will be there at the appropriate time. The tour will end 300m lower down the High Street and the guide will point out the way back to the station. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if I am running late ?\n\n\n\n\nPlease aim to arrive on time as the walking tour will move off shortly after the start time as the tour can’t be delayed. There are plenty of places to eat or grab a coffee on the High Street if you are early.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing : Self-Care In Nature's Health Service
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the healing power of nature and discover inner peace through mindfulness techniques in our Forest Bathing event\n\n\nForest Bathing – Mindfulness In Nature \nJoin us for a rejuvenating experience of Forest Bathing – Mindfulness In Nature at the Wonderful Wimbledon Common. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and discover the healing power of the forest. I will lead you on a short walk which will include a few stopping points to enagage in exercises using our core senses plus some breathwork and a mindfulness meditation. Leave your worries behind and embrace the serenity of the trees\, as you engage in mindful activities and connect with the natural world. This in-person event is the perfect opportunity to recharge your mind\, body\, and soul. Don’t miss out on this unique experience! \nMeet 10.20am at at Windmill Tea Rooms\, Wimbledon Common\, SW19 5NQ. \nFAQs: \n  \nWhat is forest bathing?\nIt is a mindful and sensory experience in forest and woods and surrounding nature. It is an immersive experience that leaves participants calm\, relaxed and with an improved sense of wellbeing. \n  \nIs forest bathing new?\nForest Bathing ‘Shinrin Yoku’ was developed in the early 1980s in Japan and has been fully integrated into their holistic health programmes. Of course\, indigenous people around the world have used nature as a source of maintaining good health and recovering from poor health for thousands of years. \nIs there any proof that it can really help me?\nThere is a lot of research on the benefits of forest bathing from Japan and the UK has 11 universities currently researching\, monitoring and publishing the positive impacts of forest bathing to support government and healthcare initiatives such as green social prescribing. \nWhat can I expect to gain from a forest bathing session?\nEveryone will enjoy their own experience\, but most participants report feelings of awe\, of wonder at the beauty of the trees\, plus increased wellbeing from being bathed in the phytoncides (chemicals) released by the trees\, and a sense of community from being part of a group. \nCan anyone take part in a forest bathing session?\nForest bathing is accessible to anyone who can enter the woods safely. If you have any mobility or health issues\, please get in touch and we can discuss. \nIs forest bathing safe?\nYes\, but remember\, sessions take place in nature\, so participants have to be conscious of their surroundings and treat nature with respect. A full risk assessment is carried out before each session. Additionally\, the weather is continually monitored for high winds and lightning etc. \nIs forest bathing suitable for children?\nYes\, and it is a great activity for groups such as schools or clubs. However\, some sessions are for adults or older teens only\, so do check before you book. \nWhat do I have to bring with me?\nBring a mat to lie on and a bottle of water. That’s all you need. Be sure also to dress for the weather – rainwear for example\, or a hat in summer. \nDo I have to remove any clothing?\nNo\, unless you feel particularly warm and want to e.g. remove your jacket. Temperatures can vary so we advise participants to wear layers \nDoes it involve being in water?\nNo\, despite its name it does not involve immersing yourself in water. \nDo sessions go ahead if it rains or in high winds?\nIn most cases yes. We don’t enter the woods if there is a chance of lightning\, but rain in itself is not a huge problem\, as we are under the tree canopy\, which provides some shelter\, and rain gives us the chance to have an extra dimension to our time together in the woods. Extreme winds would result in a session being postponed. \n

SUMMARY:Putney walking tour - More than just a boat race
DESCRIPTION:A walking tour of Putney and Fulham along the river. During the stroll\, you’ll be taught about some of the history of the boat race and visit various places such as the Palace built for the Bishops of London and medieval churches. \n\nThis walk will be perfect for those who who want to go on a riverside stroll in London – as most of the time we will be venturing through a riverside park and along the banks of the River Thames \nFamous the world over with its association with the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race\, Putney and Fulham offers so much more in the way of history which very few people know much about. \nObviously\, we will hear of some of the history of the Boat Race and its association with Putney\, but the race also embodies its own brand of style and elitism. And this fits in with Putney which has attracted the rich and famous over the years. \nWe will see the Palace built for the Bishops of London as well as old medieval churches and almshouses. \nAnd the history will encompass such a wide variety of figures from history and contemporary times such as Thomas Cromwell\, Marc Bolan and Kermit the Frog!

SUMMARY:M. John Harrison in Conversation With Julia Armfield - Putney
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of conversation with writer M. John Harrison to celebrate the reissue of his brilliant novel The Course of The Heart\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of conversation with Britain’s greatest living writer M. John Harrison to celebrate the reissue of his beguiling\, unsettling\, and brilliant novel The Course of The Heart. \nHarrison will be interviewed by the novelist Julia Armfield. \nOn a hot May night\, three Cambridge students carry out a ritualistic act that changes their lives. Decades later\, none of the participants can remember what transpired; but their clouded memories bind them together. Unable to move on\, Pam Stuyvesant has epilepsy and is plagued by sensual visions. Her husband Lucas believes that a dwarfish creature is stalking him\, and invents histories to soothe Pam’s fears. Self-styled Sorcerer Yaxley becomes obsessed with a terrifyingly transcendent reality. The narrator is seemingly the least effected participant in the ritual: he is haunted by the smell of roses\, and his guilt as he attempts to help his friends escape the torment that has engulfed their lives. \nStrange\, dreamlike and moving\, The Course of the Heart is an examination of the edges of humanity where we lie\, hide\, hurt and heal. \nA gloriously intelligent\, beautifully written and thoroughly maddening book – Independent \nA spare textual elegance and closure-denying restraint impresses and fulfills – Iain Banks\, Guardian \nIncisive pen portraits and quiet\, elegant prose – Lisa Tuttle\, Guardian \nOne of the best writers currently at work in English – Robert Macfarlane\, author of The Wild Places \nIs M John Harrison the best writer at work today? He’s certainly among the deftest and most original – Olivia Laing\, Guardian \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission\n\n\n\n\n\n£8.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaterstones Cardholder\n\n\n\n\n\n£6.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook & Ticket: The Course of the Heart (PB)\n\n\n\n\n\n£14.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
