SUMMARY:Artful Sips - ‘It's all Greek to me’: A Summer Wine Tasting with Shehnaz
DESCRIPTION:Ready for a taste of the Mediterranean? Join us on Thursday 11th June for an evening where art meets the ancient vineyards of Greece. I’m thrilled to welcome back wine expert and TV presenter Shehnaz for a guided tour of Greece’s most exciting summer pours. \nForget the myths – Greek wine is having a major moment. Whether you’re a complete novice or a seasoned sipper\, you’ll enjoy a relaxed\, creative atmosphere filled with flavour and insight. \nWhat’s on the menu:\n– Guided Tasting: Sip through four hand-picked Greek wines to put you in the holiday mood.\n– Expert Insider Tips: How to spot top-tier quality without the hefty price tag.\n– Perfect Pairings: Simple ideas for summer dinner parties\, date nights\, or ordering with confidence at a restaurant.\n– Artful Vibes: Enjoy your wine surrounded by the latest collection at BobCat Gallery. \nSpaces are strictly limited to keep things intimate – grab your tickets early! \nAbout Your Host: Shehnaz Hansraj\nFrom wine enthusiast to wine communicator\, Shehnaz’s journey into the world of wine began with a simple goal — to make sense of wine labels\, grape varieties\, and wine regions. \nFast forward nearly two decades\, and she has visited more than 850 vineyards across five continents. Her travels have taken her to France\, Spain\, Portugal\, South Africa\, Argentina\, Chile\, Lebanon\, Canada\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Croatia\, Germany\, Austria\, Italy\, Greece\, and closer to home\, vineyards across England and Wales. \nCountless tastings and several wine qualifications later\, her appreciation has only deepened for the geography\, history\, culture\, and food that shape and influence different wine styles around the world. \nShehnaz firmly believes there is a wine for everyone. The key? Keep an open mind and be willing to explore new and unfamiliar grapes or regions — curiosity in wine is almost always rewarded.

SUMMARY:From Dust to Ashes: The Development of Cremation in England & Wales\, 1874 to 2025 - a talk by Dr Brian Parsons.
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Putney Library are delighted to welcome back Dr Brian Parsons\, author and funeral historian\, to give this fully illustrated presentation. The talk will start by tracing the factors that led up to the first cremation at Woking in March 1885\, followed by an analysis of why cremation was so slow to develop in subsequent decades. The post-World War years witnessed a dramatic rise in the preference for cremation; today\, just over 80 per cent of funerals are at a crematorium. The final part of this talk explores this replacement of burial along with current themes such as direct cremation and the introduction of ‘Water Cremation’.\nDr Brian Parsons has worked in funeral directing in London since 1982. He now focuses on staff training\, but also researches the history of funeral service along with the development of cremation and London cemeteries. He is the author of a number of books including The London Way of Death\, Committed to the Cleansing Flame\, (with Hugh Meller) London Cemeteries: An Illustrated Guide and Gazetteer\, and (with Peter C Jupp) From Dust to Ashes. The Development of Cremation in England & Wales\, 1874-2025.\nRefreshments from 6.00pm and this FREE talk will begin at 6.30pm. Cash donations gratefully accepted.

SUMMARY:Riverside Studios at 50: Goodness Gracious Me in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A landmark reunion at the place where it all began. Goodness Gracious Me in Conversation brings together the original stars of one of British television’s most celebrated and culturally significant comedy shows\, at Riverside Studios\, Hammersmith\, on Sunday 26 April 2026 at 5pm. \nNina Wadia\, Sanjeev Bhaskar OBE and Kulvinder Ghir are joined by BBC commissioner and producer Jon Plowman CBE — whose credits include Smith & Jones\, French & Saunders\, and Absolutely Fabulous — to look back on the creation\, production\, and enduring cultural impact of their now-legendary series. \nThe story of Goodness Gracious Me began right here at Riverside Studios in 1995\, when it premiered as a live show called Peter Sellers is Dead. From those Riverside roots\, it went on to conquer BBC Radio and then BBC Television as a hilarious and groundbreaking sketch show featuring a British Asian cast\, challenging and reshaping perceptions of British identity along the way. It remains one of the most important comedy series in UK broadcasting history. \nThis is a genuinely unique reunion — a rare opportunity to hear directly from the creative team behind a show that changed British comedy and culture. The event is part of Riverside Studios’ 50th anniversary season celebrating the extraordinary talent that has found a home at the venue since 1976. \nEvery ticket purchased supports Riverside Studios’ continued mission to champion emerging artists and make the arts accessible to all. \nWhen: Sunday 26 April 2026\, 5:00pm–6:30pm (approx.)\nWhere: Riverside Studios\, 101 Queen Caroline Street\, Hammersmith\, London W6 9BN\nTickets: Available at riversidestudios.co.uk

SUMMARY:Fiction & Non-Fiction Book Club – "Travels with Charley" by John Steinbeck
DESCRIPTION:Waterstones Putney’s Fiction and Non-Fiction Book Club meets on Thursday evening to discuss Travels with Charley in Search of America by John Steinbeck – a beloved American road trip memoir that remains as resonant today as when it was first published in 1962. \nIn this charming and reflective travelogue\, Nobel Prize-winning novelist Steinbeck sets off across America in a camper truck with his standard poodle Charley\, rediscovering the vast country he had written about so memorably in works like The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. The result is a warm\, funny\, and sometimes melancholic meditation on identity\, place\, and the nature of home. \nThe Fiction and Non-Fiction Book Club welcomes readers who enjoy both literary fiction and compelling non-fiction narratives. Sessions are an hour long\, free to attend\, and open to all – whether you’ve read every word or are still working through the final chapters. \nWaterstones Putney is conveniently located at 5 Exchange Centre\, Putney High Street (SW15 1TW)\, within easy reach of East Putney tube station and Putney railway station. \nKeep an eye on @PutneyWaterstones on Instagram for upcoming book choices and in-store author events.
