There was laughter, music, and more than a few scoops of joy at Ledbury Nursing Home this week, as Wandsworth-born Barbara Collcutt celebrated her 106th birthday on 1st April.
Born in 1919 in the South London borough of Wandsworth, Barbara marked the occasion surrounded by family, friends, and care staff in a vibrant celebration filled with heartfelt moments and fond memories. As reported by The Carer, the lounge was alive with song and cheer as Barbara’s favourite local musician led a singalong, and her beaming smile lit up the room during a warm chorus of “Happy Birthday.”
One particularly special moment was Barbara receiving a birthday card from the King and Queen—an honour reserved for those who reach such a distinguished age. She was also spoiled with gifts and good wishes from loved ones.
Barbara spent most of her life in Goring-by-Sea, Sussex, before moving to Ledbury Nursing Home in 2023. She grew up with three brothers and one sister in a close-knit family. Her brothers, she recalls fondly, would always tease her about her April Fool’s Day birthday.
Wimbledon fan
A lifelong tennis enthusiast, Barbara played the sport well into her 80s and remains a devoted Wimbledon fan. She also enjoys painting, reading, and classical music—especially when live performers visit the home.
As for the secret to her longevity? Barbara credits her strong family genes—“both my grandparents lived to a good old age,” she says—and a daily love of yoghurt and ice cream.
“We are so fortunate to have Barbara as a part of our Ledbury family,” said Service Manager Jane Pye. “She is a true inspiration to us all. Her spirit, zest for life, and kindness make her an absolute joy to be around. We all love Barbara, and it was an honour to celebrate this incredible milestone with her.”
While the average UK woman lives into her early to mid-80s, Barbara has far exceeded those years with grace and warmth. She now joins the small but mighty club of British supercentenarians—proving that a loving family, a sweet tooth, and a zest for life just might be the perfect recipe for a long, fulfilling life.

The oldest verified Briton in history was Charlotte Hughes, who lived to 115 years and 228 days before passing away in 1993. As of April 2025, the UK’s oldest living person is Ethel Caterham, born in 1909, who is currently 115 years old. With a few more birthdays to come, Barbara may yet find herself among the top of that list.
